I use with either a Winchester Trapper Model 94 in 30-30 Win. (20 in. barrel) for close / dense bush hunting or my Rem 700 in 270 Win. for the more wide open areas.

My hunting partner and I usually trade off on one guy carrying an iron sights rig for the bush and one carrying a scoped rifle for the longer shots. It can get interesting depending on the terrain and what might be hunting us as well...LOL! We often hunt in Grizzly country...so one of us is usually carrying one of the following: 44 mag Mare's Leg, Rem 870 loaded with slugs or 30.06.

My next acquisition will likely be the Marlin 1895 GBL in 45-70 Gov. That covers both deer gettin' in the thick stuff and big bear medicine.

Got a 1984 700 in 30-06 and a Model Four in .270 Win. but a .243 would have served me just as well with the deer I usually bag.

Would like to try for elk with my 7.62x54r but with bad back it's a little too heavy to carry up and down mountains

I started life shooting the .30-06, moved "up" to a 7x57 Mauser round, and now mainly carry lever guns in .35 Remington, .30-30, .375 Winchester or .45-70. The deer in my area do not need a high-velocity round which can easily over-penetrate and waste a lot of energy with minimal expansion. And the big, slow stopper? Well, brownie's hear you ring that dinner bell and sometimes you're the one being hunted.

For any kind of big game I use my faithful rifle in caliber .338 win. mag. with 250 grains bullets. Most of the time I hunt in the closed forest, the shooting distance does not exceed 20 meters, and I always try to get as close as possible, since I do not use an optical viewfinder, only the original metal sights of the Remington 700.
