Scope for Model 700 30-06?

What scope would you guys recommend for a model 700 ADL in 30-06? Most of my shots are 100-150 yards. But I also hunt in NC and KY and would like to be able to shoot out to 250-300 yards. The scope the gun came with is junk. I have some gift cards and Cabela’s bucks so the money is flexible. The most I would like to spend is $450+/-.

Thanks,
Jim

Were it me, ID buy a Burris, Leopold, or Vortex, 3x9,with a 40mm objective. I say this because most folks want a variable scope.

I mostly use two different models, either Burris FullField II 3-9x40's, or Nikon Buckmasters/ProStaff 3-9x40's on all my medium game rifles. Excellent scopes for the money, the Nikons have vastly improved lately and the Burris are excellent in their own right. I just picked up a Pentax GameSeeker to try, but haven't mounted it yet.

The Nikon s are good for that price range and the other brand I use is vortex I have a vortex crossfire on my 783 and its perfect match for 100-400 yds. Shop around read the reviews a lot of the companies are very competitive and the standards are high now you'll get what you pay for .

I went with the Nikon Monarch 3, 4x16x42. I had Cabela's bucks and gift certificates. Didn't cost me anything. I sighted in at 100yds. Next time out I will try the BDC at 200.

I like the Leupold VX-2 3-9X40 or 50 with the Duplex Reticle or Wide Duplex for extra long range hunting. I really don't need the BDC and other aiming aids as it seems to make me lazy in figuring where my projectile is going to hit. Kind of like using a calculator for a math problem instead of doing it with pencil & paper, or in your head. I compared the VX-2 to a few Nikon, BSA, Burris, Simmons, Weaver, and Zeiss. At $400, that Leupold VX-2 was awfully bright and clear.

The BDC on the Nikon doesn't seem to work when zeroed at 100 yards. A buddy of mine says when he zeroed at 200 yards the BDC works. Other than that, I like the Monarch 3. It's very clear.

That's precisely why I do my own math. Open sights or simple cross-hairs lets me make the right aiming corrections in all scenarios. No two shots are ever the same on the open range during the hunt. Why limit your success to any kind of aiming system when it has no idea what you're aiming at or what the conditions are? Guns don't shoot, people do. Guns don't aim, people do. Guns, sights, and scope have no knowledge, people do. Like I taught my kids & grand-kids... Get proficient with open sights and never blame a miss on the equipment.

J., Did your buddy use Spot On to dial in the BDC ? The more accurate the info you enter the more accurate your longrange shot's will be. I have used Spot On in many Nikon Shooting event's and watched guy's blow up 4 inch jars of tannerite at 600 yards.
I would suggest to your buddy he try to get an accurate MV and measure mid bore to mid scope which will increase his accuracy. I would be happy to discuss any problem's he is having getting the BDC reticle to work as designed.

JC, got it but I can't reply back to you for some reason....?
This is what I would do with a 30-06. I used to shoot one when I lived in Oregon and hunted the high plains where longrange shots where the norm. 200 yards is an easy poke with the set-up you have and being 1.5 inches high at 100 yards shouldn't be a problem.
Take a look at this Spot On page and see what you think. I didn't adjust for what your exact scope height is or exact MV of the ammo you are using.

Unfortunately, since I started this thread, I developed a rare retina disease. My vision is terrible. I still shoot but I'm limited to 50 yard shots....with optics. So these days, the BDC is useless to me but the clarity and magnification of the Nikon Monarch 3, 4x16x42 is helpful.

Excellent. Totally in agreement with you. Very good teacher for your children and grandchildren.

Nothing fancy on my 84 700 ADL. Just a Bushnell XLT 3x9. Glass is decent and it has held zero for 5 years. Think my Model Four could use a newbie though. Either a Leupold or something else decent.

In my land there is an old saying, which is usually said when one is going to buy an optical viewfinder: "Spend in the visor equal to or more than what the rifle is worth". As said, it is good as long as money is available. By the ranges of distance that you mention, I would opt for a 3-9x40 look, in terms of brand, and if I would live in a country like the US I would opt for Leupold.
