I've looked around on the forum and haven't seen this covered, if it is I apologize for making another post about it. I've read that some people polish their extractor rods. Are any of you familiar with this technique and what are your recommendations for doing it? I've cleaned them thoroughly when I've had the gun stripped down for cleaning, but was wondering what the benefits of having polished rods would be. Thanks for any input.

Polishing the rods will allow for smoother bolt travel translating to less jams. I placed mine in a high speed drill (only hand tight enough to keep rod spinning). Then take polishing compound on a cotton cloth (old tee shirt) and apply pressure between your fingers. Careful not to bend the rod. polish until you can't feel any tooling marks with your fingers or lips. There will be no bluing on the rods left. When assembling the rifle back together strip the oil off of the rod and springs and use a dry lubricant like powdered graphite. When tightening your set screws, bottom out and then turn back 1/4 turn. (Over tightening may result in bowing the rods and binding the bolt). It will also help to polish the guides that the rods slide in. I used a cotton swab in a drill and polishing compound. It takes time but helped the cycling of my 597 dramatically.

I just bought a new HB 597. Took it home and totally took it apart the rods were really smooth from the factory so i skipped this process. Afew years ago i bought a 597 it was rough everywhere inside the reciever and the trigger was a heavy rough 7.5lbs. I think the quality has come way up. The new guns action is slick and the mag actualy works. The big green has fixed the 597 haha.
If you can't sell it don't buy it
