Hello all,
I'm new here. I am in the market for a bolt gun and I have always wanted to have a Remington 700 in left hand. I have heard horror stories about the quality of the new rifles lately and I don't know what to think. Everyone I know that has a 700 bought it 5 or 6 years ago. From what I have heard one has to put a new trigger in and bed the stock, if it is a sps you might as well get a new stock. I don't really want to pay over 500 bucks for a rifle and then have to put more money into it right away to make is decent. Everyone I talk to says might as well buy a savage, it will be better out of the box and I won't have to put as much money into it. Please let me know what have been your experiences have been with the new 700's. what are the bench rest group sizes you are getting?
How are the new 700's?

Welcome to the Remington Owners Forum midmo !!
My Remington Model 700 is from 1980, so I cannot comment on the new ones... |

My SPS-V .204 is a heck of a shooter out of the box. I finally stumbled on a good load for my SPS-SS .243 with Barnes TTSX bullets. My SPS-SS .257 does pretty well with 80gr TTSX factory loads, but about 1.75 MOA with the regular SPs. MY ADL SS '06 is a challenge so far, but I think I may have some issues with the Picatinny rail/receiver interface that wouldn't be an issue with a two piece setup. Note, though, that these are all in McMillan stocks. I just like the way Mickeys fit, and the color combos you can get with them. Finish on my newer 700 has been a little rough (gravel blast, I call it) and the new trigger is not my favorite.

what do you guys think about tikka t3"s? or even brownings? i am looking for something in left hand. I would preferably get something that I do not have to change things on at first but have the possibility to change things later. By this i mean, i have heard that the 700's triggers aren't all that great and they need to be bedded right off the bat.

Tikka does have an extensive left handed model selection...

i didn't mean to sound like i was bashing the 700. i have always wanted one but now don't know if it is the wisest choice.

Have you ever shot a Remington 700 !?
Do they make one that is left handed ? |

I have shot a 700 but it was at least 10 years ago. Remington makes the CDL and the SPS in left hand. I believe those are the only two.
If I get one will be for deer hunting here in Missouri. I do shoot at the range as much as I can though, I just enjoy shooting. I have a Marlin XL7 now and it is a tack driver but I would like something in left hand. |

In my opinion the quality of the Model 700 has really taken a nosedive. Earlier this year after booking an elk hunt my dad bought me a 700 XCR II in .300 Win. I mounted the scope and let the gun sit for a few months before sighting in. I reciprocated the gun gift and bought my dad a 50th Anniversary BDL in 7mm. When he went to sight his in he had an issue where the floor plate would open whenever there was even one shell in the magazine. No issues if the magazine had nothing in it, but every time it was shot with anything in the magazine the floor plate would open. When I got around to going to sight in, I loaded factory Winchester 180 grain power points, first shot the bolt handle could be raised, but the bolt could not be pulled back. Eventually was able to get the bolt pulled back, and tried again. Same thing, gun fired, bolt could be lifted, but not pulled back. That was the end of trying to sight in for me.
Called Remington, and the repair would take 6-8 weeks for my gun. They said they thought the chamber needed polishing because of a tight chamber. I did not have that amount of time to wait, so I decided that it was time to buy a different rifle. Landed on a Sako Finnlight. For sure a bit more than I wanted to pay, but am completely happy with the Sako. As it turns out I never saw an elk, so I didn't even need a rifle, but after two problems from two brand new guns, I would be very cautious of anything new from Remington. I hate to say that since both myself and my dad have had many 700s over the years, and these are the first issues we've ever had. If Cerebus sells Remington to Taurus or HK I may reconsider if they get their quality control improved, but unless things change I've bought my last new Remington, and will be sure to check when anything was made if buying used. |
