Hi..
I'm thinking about buying a rifle in cal 308, and I found a 700 SPS Varmint with detachable 5 shot magazine..
Is this a good starting rifle?
What is the difference between the different SPS editions? Varmint, Tactical etc..

Sounds like a great starting rifle! What are your planning on using your rifle for?

I'm thinking about starting with hunting red fox, but next fall I probably will hunt moose..
I know that it's a big caliber to use on fox, but I have an easy access to some 7.62 x 51.. |

The Varmint has a heavy, "Remington Varmint" contour barrel, finished at 26". The Tactical has the same profile, but finished at (I think) 20". The standard SPS will have either a "Remington Sporter" or "Remington Magnum Sporter" profile, depending on chambering... the magnums get the Magnum profile. 24" on standard, 26" on magnums.
Listed weights: Varmint: 8.5 lbs. Tactical: 7.5 lbs. Sporter: 7 to 7.625 lbs, depending on chambering, 7.25 for a .308 |
