Happy Thanksgiving, all
I have my grandfather's model 10 which I understand dates from before 1930. He used it up into the 60's and I still have a box of Peters High Velocity plastic shotgun shells. I fired a few of them back in 1982 to test her out.

The gun is in very good shape internally but the problem is that it's fitted with a Lyman Cutts compensator and choke. I’m told I should only shoot shells with fiber wads as modern plastic cups/wads will jam in the choke.
This makes sense. So I am planning to order fiber wad shells from RST in Pennsylvania.

My question is: can I shoot steel shot without damaging the barrel? I’m happy to buy bismuth but I’m not sure RST load bismuth shot with fiber wads.

I’ve also heard you should not shoot steel shot in older guns. But how much harder is the steel of a “modern” shotgun barrel?

I don’t want to damage the gun or myself but I do think it would be great to take it out on a hunt again!

Thanks!
Hugh

Happy Thanksgiving! I used to have an 870 with a Cutts and never heard a warning of not to use plastic wads. Mine shot fine with them, and they were used on trap guns for a long good many years.

Thanks!
I wonder when they started using plastic wads? If it was when they went to plastic shell cases then I've probably shot the as well. I may cut open one of the Peters shells to see what it has.
