I just got my 783 in .308. After a bit of researching, I decided upon a muzzle brake from Witt. I have no interest in the company, just thought to give a word about the clamp on muzzle break.
I did it mainly because I don't have ready access to a gunsmith...I bought my rifle at dicks.
Before the clamp on install, the recoil was pretty strong, causing me to keep my eye away from the rifle scope. Obviously, that wrecks accuracy. With the muzzle brake, I can get my eye virtually to the scope and not worry about gashing myself.
My shots have been about 1" at 100yds, and I am going to try 200 yds on my next sojourn to the range. The 783 really seems to be a great value rifle.
Witt machine muzzle brake works really well

I was shooting w a sled and with sand bags. The sand bags seemed to be more accurate...
I was using whitetail 150gr ammo. |

Sounds good...

So I think I created a problem w. the muzzle brake. My scope fell off! When I read about muzzle brakes, one bad thing is that scopes may get broken by the sudden forward acceleration of the rifle. My scope BASE jumped off the weaver base. The base was installed by Remington...my scope was the generic one that came w the gun. Now I'm wondering if I should use loctite on the screws and on the rings holding the scope. Any thoughts/help for a newb?

I would start with the Loctite...

Start with the blue Locktite. I'd use a crap scope to test it though. I had one of the front base screws keep backing out on my 700BDL 308. Been 4 years and it is still tight, knock on wood. Good luck..

So I bought a Nikon pro master during the Black Friday sale ($99). I got new weaver scope mounts, with twin screws each ring. I got a torque screwdriver. Set the ring bases to 15 in lbs. I put the scope ring with the front ring as far forward on the gun base. I put the rear scope ring as far back on the rear base. Reading online, they recommend you put the scope rings as far forward...I believe to help resist the pressure from the recoil. But w a muzzle break, the rear ring set to the back of the base may help the forward acceleration of the gun.
I used loctite blue on all the joints and between the scope and rings. From what I've read, blue loctite may be removed, and I don't want to experience a scope problem again. |

I've shot the rifle about 100 rounds w the scope mount. It has been rock hard. The muzzle Zelenograd brake still works great.
