I have gotten into the habit of stopping into pawn shops when I am out of town on business. Most of the time you see well used guns that haven't been taken care of. There is the occasional gem you run into. I found a Remington Model Four in .270 the other day. The condition was very good for being manufactured in 1986. No issues with the bluing and no nicks or dings in the wood stock. It did have a 2.5x10 Tasco scope on it. Not much to speak of but it was the Japan version. I offered them $400 out the door and they took it. I think I did pretty good on the deal. Now lets hope it doesn't have any jamming issues that I have read about.

Got one in .270 myself dstegjas. Bought it in 81 and happy to report no jamming issues so far. Price sounds great to me as the asking prices on Gunbroker are usually around $550 or a bit more. They are well finished guns with decent walnut. Heck I paid $400 for mine back then. Have heard the 742s had jamming issues but Model Fours have different bolt and gas system I have read. Read Remington made around 68,000 from 81-87 and most were made in 30:06. Far less in .270. Gettin 2 inch groups with mine at 100 yards with Remington Core-lokts which ain't bad for a semi. Best of luck with yours.

If you need info concerning production of the pump and auto models let me know as I have a book which has interesting facts. P.S. I think you stole it for $400. Nice grab!! |

Thanks for pics. Looks to be in really nice shape. Hope you get decent groups at 100 yds. Beautiful rifle compared to some of the abortions we see marketed today.

Mauser9, Thanks for the offer of the Model Four info. It would be interesting to know how many .270 calibers were manufactured. I have seen the number 16,000 tossed around. I am not sure if that is accurate or not.
I do like the little touch of putting the .270 case head in the receiver right in front of the magazine. Did Remington do that with any other of their models or just on the Model Four ? Believe your figure of 16,000 is well in the ball park. My book states that 23.9% of Model Fours were made in .270 WIn. Most were chambered in 30:06. Gives a 49.2% Far fewer in .243 and 308 caliber. And yes the cartridge case head is a carry over from the Model 14 and 141 pump models made decades ago. Only other gun was the Model Six pump 81-87 also used the case head denoting caliber. Prices usually range from $450-600 on Gunbroker I have noticed. Best of luck with it. |
