Can anyone out there who has owned a Model Four auto or cares to comment on the reliability let me know. I have read of issues concerning the feeding or jamming of the Model 742 but do to changes in the bolt and gas system of the Four -7400 series I wondered if many of the bad issues went away. Personally I have not had any feeding or ejection issues with mine but to tell the truth it does not get extensive use. I did hear the rails in receiver helped with the feeding issue. Just keep mine clean and hope for the best. It is a beautiful gun with high polish and nice grain walnut. Thanks in advance for any info.

Only made em from 81-87 Shooter. Enhanced version of Model 7400 with shell case head denoting caliber of rifle and select wood with cut checkering. Read Rem. produced approximately 68,000 of em. half in 30-06 and remaining ones in 243,6MM, 270, 308 I believe.

I have not heard of any further issues. The 742 basically would eat itself up as the locking lugs would bend and sheer off the guide rails for the bolt carrier. While the 742 was basically a good rifle the design had flaws, like it being hard as the dickens to take apart and clean. To me, IMO, this was one of the downfalls of the 742.
With the Net if you cannot find issues, there usually aren't any. But you should check hunting forums and other large calibre shooting forums. Let us know, info is always needed. |

Thanks for the input Hickory. I was aware of the issues concerning the Model 742 but as stated earlier mine is a Model four in .270 with the changes to the bolt which locks up more like a bolt. Did away with the cuts in receiver wall on mine. Bought it back in 81. Hopefully I will continue to have problem free usage. Thanks for further info on the 742. |
