Good for you, but what a sad commentary on the competence of a once great company.

I received my R51 about 10 days ago. I managed to go to the range yesterday.
About 300 rounds later and I am very pleased. The effort required and smoothness of the slide motion is vastly improved. The front and rear sights are highly visible with a rapid target picture acquisition. The low bore axis gives recoil a "push" feeling with minimal muzzle flip. The trigger has a short takeup with a crisp break. Target reacquisition is much faster compared to typical semiauto pistol. Accuracy, It makes me look decent a shot. Breakin time occurred over 250 rounds into 4 mags. Major snafus did not occur. The magazines required more breakin than the pistol. The tip of the round was "stuck" under the leading lip of the magazine occasionally for the first several loadings of each magazine. The horizontal lying round would cause a failure to load from the magazine . I purposefully used each magazine equally. Ammo was sellier and belloit factory ammo and freedom arms reloads(sitting for over 2 years) in pretty equal quanities. No ammo preference or incidence of problems were observed. By the time I was done shooting(250 to 300 rounds) , no failures of pistol or magazines were occurring. The magazines are well constructed with tough seamless appearing stainless steel. The appearance and function of the magazines were greatly improved and problem free after breakin. For this lefty, Ambidextrous magazine releases are particularly sweet in placement and ease of activation. Each magazine drops out of the magwell consistently , smoothly, easily. Disassembly as before is simple. Reassembly as before requires practice and hand strength. Quick somebody invent a tool to make it easier. The hammer (bolt)block is shiny smooth , well finished, solid reassuring. Size and weight are ideal . All surfaces are smooth and curved for ease of withdrawl. Shootability, concealability, great recoil and targeting characteristics ........ As awaited Pedersen design. Does it resemble a 1911. Heck no........Some aspects are better.........Not yet time tested. But I am ready to shoot, shoot and shoot......Maybe Remington is delivering the goods this time. |

Thank You.
Very interesting in your review compared to RyeonHams youtube videos. He has had several issues that gives self doubt. I will pick mine up on Monday and plan on an immediate disassembly before shooting. If all looks good and functions well, I will be throwing several hundred rounds down range before sun down. Cant wait to see if I got another lemon or a functioning firearm. Stay tuned.... "...to disarm the people - that was the best and most effectual way to enslave them." -George Mason

I actually recommend shooting a couple hundred rounds before dissassembly. I took it apart immediately. The spring tension is considerable when pulling on the barrel at the gripping grooves . If the barrel is released with with the barrel rotated from center then the edge with the logo (9mm Luger +P) can slap into the lateral wall of the slide. I created a burr on that edge with scratching. I easily buffed out most of the scratches and the burr.

I understand what your saying. Only reason I wanted to disassemble straight from Remington is because ryeonham said, I believe, his gun already had considerable wear inside and his barrel was dirty (not to mention his disconnector pin was less than half of the length it should be). I wonder if they even shot the gun I received, given its history of the Gen 1 (and now 2 already) I would like to inspect their work myself. Its not their hand that could get blown off. Keep in touch on your progress, glad to hear its running good.

I try not to take what rye on ham says as accurate. When I watch his videos I can see how little experience he really has with guns. He just doesn't sound like he entirely knows what he's talking about, hard to watch

Im not disagreeing with you but I dont think he would of fabricated a story about the internal breech block wear out of the box from remington. They dont exactly have the best reputation right now and The camera doesnt lie there. They probably did shoot it (maybe all of them) before they went to customers. But that much wear with, i assume, not alot of rounds shot is not acceptable. So first off i will pull the slide, inspect, and look inside the barrel to see for myself and go from there. I have around 1000 rounds of 9mm begging to be shot.

FYI, the interior of mine was very clean and appeared to have little to no use. And as stated the breech block was very nicely done and smooth

Picked up the R51 today. First thing I did was remove the slide and inspect the inside. Mine had very little wear as I'm sure they fired a few rounds out of it. Just shot 100 rds of Federal 115gr. ball ammo through it with zero issues on FTF and FTE, also no bulges in the cases or unusual wear. Removed the slide again and about the same amount of wear as before. Obviously the slide operates a lot smoother and the take down pin comes out easier as well. No dropped mags orgrip screws coming loose. Nothing really exciting to report that hasn't been mentioned before. I will probably shoot another 100 or 200 rds again tonight and comment if I run into any issues, but so far so good here.
The side to side trigger play still bugs me and would like to of stuck with something other than polymer on this gun. Also will note that it has the Charlotte NC stamped frame, not Huntsville Alabama. "...to disarm the people - that was the best and most effectual way to enslave them." -George Mason

Thanks for the updates and reviews everyone. Keep them comming. I'm sure there are many people reading them that just don't make comments.

I shot 200 rounds again yesterday. I shot many mags as fast as possible . Three mags failed to load on the initial round. If I made sure each presenting round was not under the leading lip of the mag then none failed to load (FTL). I reload 40 S&W, 44 mag, 357 mag, 45 acp, 45 colt, 38 special and 38S&W. I dont reload 9mm yet. I measured OAL for the Sellier and Bellot and reloaded Freedom munitions ammo ...both with FMJ. The OAL are exactly the same. My experiences with these magazines despite"excellent fit and finish" led me to want to seat each projectile a bit deeper. I have not done so as yet.
I want to just keep shooting for now but note that each "top" round in each magazine be "free" from the leading edge of each magazine. |

Careful when you start reloading 9mm. I've been reloading for 20 years in several of the calibers you mentioned, but I didn't start reloading 9mm until just a couple years ago. I never experienced case head separations or case cracking near the head until I started reloading 9mm. They are operating at .357mag pressures and a lot of the range brass you pick up may have been fired through Glocks, which are very hard on cases because their lack of support near the case head (to enable feeding) leads to a barely perceptible bulge near the head that weakens it. This bulge is mainly a problem with 9mm because there is a slight taper to the case so the bulge can't be gotten rid of with regular resizing. I'm very careful about what I load up for my 9's now.

Thank you for the information. The taper and unsupported barrel issue versus price has me hesitating.

Here is a new posting from Jeff at Gunblast. He seems to believe the pistol is pretty solid.

Just wondering. How does the fired brass look? On the old model, the primers all looked like an outie belly button suggesting a lack of support during firing letting a little too much pressure work on them. This was demonstrated in a lot of the early videos and kind of made me a little nervous with mine.

primers and cases look fine on the federal ammo I was shooting, several hundred rounds in and running like a swiss watch.....so far.

Well, there's basically five R51's allocated to my city. I've checked with the only half dozen other shops and they don't have an order yet for any.
My usual place had an order in before the recall for 5. I spoke with the honcho over there today and 1 of those R51's has MY name on it! Woo hoo! ![]() Can't wait |
|
|
Let me whet your appetite then, Shot another 50 or so rounds this evening and its running flawless. No cycling issues or mag feeding of any kind. Its quite a pleasure to shoot now. Keep thinking something will happen given it history, but nope....not yet anyways.

I now understand the disassembly and reassembly of the R 51 by watching the video by Travis Tomasi on Remington's R51 website, https://www.remington.com/handguns/remington-r51.
Now I can easily perform assembly and disassembly of the R51. I highly recommend learning from this video. The R51 is not the 1911. Drawing back the slide and removing the pin is similar but the remainder is new territory. Thanks to Remington and Travis Tomasi for the video. |

I received a call today from Remington , a North Carolina area code. I was inquired as to my experiences with my recently received R51. Pleasant conversation and simply related the same experiences that I have shared here. The interviewer sounded busy. I have the feeling that release is on schedule and the long awaited Remington R51 9mm +P , Pedersen based AFFORDABLE ultra low bore axis conceal/carry, accurate, intuitively targetable Wolverine, Honey Badgered beast of a truly concealable pistol is gonna kick some serious butt. I like it.....No, I love this gun !
