Thanks Shooter. That old 51 feels like part of your hand when you have your grip on it, and hardly any muzzle flip, and not a sharp edge anywhere to snag on a pocket. I agree, the 51 is beautiful compared to the R51.

Well, here's my little collection of guns. They keep me busy. The long guns were passed down to me when dad died and they were his pride-n-joy, especially the top two.
Top to bottom; left to right: Remington "The Sportsman" Mod 11, 12 Gauge, Browning A-5 action w/ recoiling barrel and PolyChoke (1948). 1st US built Semi-Auto Shotgun. Not to be confused with '11-48' or other '11-' models; Winchester Model 88 .308Win Pre-64 w/ Lyman Alaskan 1.5X on Redfield mount (1958); Winchester Model 74 .22LR Semi-Auto (1941) Sig Sauer P938 9mm; Remington Model 51 .380ACP (1919); Remington 1911 R1 .45ACP Gov80; Colt 1991 Gov80 .45ACP; S&W Model 520 6-shot, only 3000 built for NYSP in 1980 & discont'd.; S&W 22A-1 .22LR target w/7" bbl.

Well, after getting a few quotes on trading in the new 1911 R1, I've decided to start shooting it. The offerings quoted are just sickening to say the least. If I ever get the 2nd R51 back from my son, I'll send it in to Remington and maybe deal directly with them to trade up to the Carry Commander. So, this Monday or Tuesday, I'll head to the range and see how the new R1 stacks up against my Colt. Dry-firing them side-by-side, I can't tell one from the other except for the trigger creak in the R1 which should go away after cleaning the factory lube out and re-lubing with GunButter and a few rounds fired at the range. One guy told me his trigger creak went away just with the lube. We'll see next week. Anyone else got their R1 and fired it yet?

Thanks rem-toter.
One gun... ten guns... It's all relevant when it comes to the bare satisfaction of shooting. If it's in your blood, it doesn't matter how many. Sometimes I wish I had only one so I wouldn't have to choose what I feel like shooting on any given day. Tomorrow (Tuesday) is CHL holders 1/2 price day at the range and the 1911s are going with me. Maybe the .22 also. Hmmm, the old 51 too since I have an overabundance of .380 in the safe. Oh heck, I'll just take 'em all since I'll be on my lane for 4 or 5 hours. Coffee, lunch, shooting lane, dinner... that's enough for one day. This will be the first time shooting the Remington 1911 R1 I got from Remington at the first of this month. Side-by-side to the Colt... should be an interesting comparison. |

keep us posted Rick on your thoughts of your new R1.

CHING-A-LING!!!!! All 26 lanes were full and people on a waiting list to shoot. Sorry, but that's just too much worry on my mind thinking there might be some gun-wielding idiot playing John Wayne or Wild Bill Hickok somewhere in one of those lanes. That does not constitute a peaceful & relaxing day at the range. Maybe by next week, all those people will have gone home and I'll have my favorite lane #1.
Sorry remmy, I really wanted to write a range report on the R1 today. I like that term SHOOTER, "specimens"... "Taking my .45 caliber specimens to the range!" Heh-heh. But really, thanks! I take pride in my tools and 4 of those guns have been by my side for 60+ years. And hopefully, none of them will ever need to be a weapon... just tools for punching paper and harvesting a fine variety of meals from the wild. It doesn't take much to make me happy, and I enjoy having each-n-every one of you guys here as part of my remote family. Hope you're all having a great holiday. |
Lol, I know what you mean. When I only take a couple to the range to shoot, I feel like I'm missing out on something! I went last weekend, and ended up taking four of them, but left the .40 S&W at home...still felt like I was letting the ol' girl down somehow. The shooting was fun, but them came the three hours of "gun detail", when I got home. Oh well, that's the way it goes I guess. USMC 83' - 87'

Well guys, the holidays are over and the weekend is half over. Monday or Tuesday will be my next shooting day, depending on the weather. That last cold front was just nasty. My float-plan is the 2 1911s, the Colt & the new R1 to compare, and about 400-600 rounds of UMC 230 gr range ammo and 100 rounds of Fiocchi. I have Remington Golden Sabre to test in both but need to wait until the ground dries up a little. Don't like slippin-n-slidin in the mud with firearms in hand. Also have 100 rounds of Speer Gold Dot in 185 gr. I kind-of expect a failed cycle or two in the Remington since it isn't broken in yet, but maybe not. We shall see. But again, another dry day outdoors for the non-brass ammo.

At least you have only semi-frozen, wet slippery mud. The dirt/mud here is as hard as Granite by this time of the year. Easier to walk on, but when the air temp is about 10 degrees, and the wind chill is below zero, you can't shoot for crap. USMC 83' - 87'

Well, the black gumbo we have down here is hard as bricks in the summertime. When it is wet, it is like walking on ice. It's some bad stuff. Winters down here average 30-45 degrees during the winter and we rarely get below freezing. That's perfect for me because I won't shoot to harvest a large animal if it's above 45 degrees. Skinned first, then field dressed, I like to age the kill for at least 2 days on the tree where no sunlight can't reach it before transporting begins. The meat is always richer in flavor and the enzymes don't get negatively active like on warm flesh. Rapid cooling and cold aging keeps it from tasting wild.

I finally made it to the range this afternoon. Checked in at 4:PM and left at 8:PM. Did my comparison shoot between the Colt 1991 Gov 80 and my new Remington 1911 R1. I was pleasantly surprised by the performance of the R1. No failures or hiccups of any kind and shot groups identical to the Colt up to 10 yards. At 15 yards, the R1 actually shot 1-1/2'' groups on 8 of a 16 target page where the Colt shot the other 8 targets in groups averaging 1-3/4''. I think the R1 won today's match. I shot 350 rounds of Remington UMC 230 gr FMJ through the R1 and 150 rounds from the same case through the Colt. I'm also pleased with my S&W 22A-1 .22LR target pistol that I bought the same day I bought the Colt 1911. With CCI 40 gr round nose 1080 fps, it shot 1'' groups consistently at 21 yds. That's as far as the lanes' trolleys will take the targets. Next week, I'll shoot the Norma TAC-22 ammo and see how it compares. All in all guys, I had a great day at the range today and only spent about $240s worth of ammunition. Academy has the UMC in 500 round bulk for $209. Everyone else is $229. So, check your local Academy for the best price if you want to shoot the Remington UMC. If you find it cheaper somewhere else or online, let me know. Ok? Anyone taken their new R1 out yet???

Finally received our R1 replacement for the r51. Got it cleaned up and fired a couple mags behind the garage . CMC mag I had work fine but stock mag failed to chamber the last round. Springs don't feel very strong so will add some wolff +% springs to them. Other wise my handloads run fine a. That is for now. Hoped to go to the range today but may but make it.

I guess I should have checked back here sooner. I really liked my R51 but was worried about some of the issues. I felt that it shot beautifully and was a pleasure to carry until I checked to see if it would dry fire out of battery and had the funny "outie" primer circles. I have since bought a Ruger LC9S and really like it even though it is not all metal. Really torn with which direction to go. Have a Springfield A1, High Standard Crusader Compact (officers size), and a full size High Standard 1911A1. A couple of Bersa Ultra Compact .45's in strategic locations so not sure if I need the R1. I guess the refund does not make sense because my LGS gave me such a good deal it would make sense taking the R1 and selling it.
My R51 has been gone so long I almost forgot it. With it (if I get the replacement) and the LC9 I probably will sell off some .380's. |

Hey rasco, I hear what you're saying about the 1911s. For one, my saying is, "A man can't own TOO many 1911s." I would definitely opt to let Remington send you the R1. However, as far as its value to sell or trade at a local gun store, it becomes worth about $330 to $360 in trade, brand new in the box, because it becomes classified as a 'used firearm'. That said, either collect it and shoot it along with the rest of them, or list it yourself to sell to an individual for a much better price. Call Remington on Monday and have them do the R1. You should have it within 10 - 14 days sent to your LGS and they pay the FFL transfer fee. Just get a copy of your LGS's FFL license because Remington needs a copy of that and will tell you where & how to send it. If you're put on "eternal hold" with Remington, use the "call-back" option when they announce it. They're quick to call you back. Back to the R51, I do love the feel and accuracy of it. I own an original Model 51 (.380ACP), its predecessor, and have been shooting it for 50+ years without a hiccup... ever! I will get a Gen2 R51 when they get back out and reported as reliable. Commenting on your HS choices, I have a soft spot in my heart for High Standard, and they are now located about 10 miles from me at my Houston home. They're working on my Supermatic as we speak. They've had it for over a year waiting on one part, but they keep me informed. |
|
Thanks
I have not talked to my LGS but would expect them to do right by me on it and go with what they would pay for an R1 in trade. If they do not transfer it to me it is still new weapon if not registered with Rem, not sure how Rem handles that. They normally sell or get me anything they can for about 10% over cost. They are great small business, two brothers. The High Standard ones today are really Armscor but still fine firearms IMO. I had $380 in the r51, I guess that is what they would pay. Looking at what R1's are going for I should be able to do better than that. All said you are right, it is not possible to own too many 1911's, although my wife would postulate there is a point where I have "enough", she thought I hit that at one I think. |

Well, I've been "off-the-leash" for over 12 years now. Adding another 1911 pretty soon. Just received another 1000 rounds of .45 ACP UMC range ammo yesterday.

Not so bad, about .39/round. I get a 15% discount from my regular Gander Mountain gun-guy. After tax, .42/round. $229.99/500 at Gander ($195.50 w/ 'brother-in-law'discount), $209.99/500 at Academy, but Academy won't budge on ammo prices. Gander & Academy are only 2.6 miles from my driveway, so I'm in there all the time buying stuff. Best part about it, no shipping fees. Midway has specials from time to time with no shipping fees and an occasional deep discount price on some good quality ammo that just doesn't sell with regularity. |
