Well, like I've said before, "A man can't have TOO many 1911s."
I agree with ya Shooter, the R1 beats out the R51, but I'll still buy another R51 if the Gen2 is successful. I'm not crazy about a 9mm for carry, but maybe it will be successful enough and rugged enough to someday become a .45 ACP... with a little more structure that is. |

So I called to request an R1 last Monday and today I stopped by local gun shop and when I walked in the guy behind the desk was unpacking my pistol. Funny that I was just checking to see if my model 1903a4 (on a Remington receiver) was in and I ended up sort of leaving with 2 guns
 . Sadly I have to wait for pistol thanks to NY State. Pictures to follow.

This R51 replacement trade-up is for the base 1911 R1 Black satin w/ walnut double diamond grips in Government size and Model 80 firing system. It's the #96323 base model. M.S.R.P. is $729.00. I'm going to try to wheel-n-deal a little with them when I turn in my 2nd R51 for the swap. Hopefully, they'll let me pay the difference and send me a Carry Commander. My local gun dealer, however, said he'd work a trade up for the base R1 that Remington sends me. So, I'll get the Carry Commander one way or the other. |

I have my SS Colt 1991 Gov and the 1st Remington R1 they sent me. I had 3 1911s but gave one to one of my kids. So, with this next R51 swap, I'll have 3 of them among my other pistols, rifles, & shotgun. When I work on the photo again, maybe I can squeeze them all into one photo and post it. |

Picked up my R1 replacement today. It looks great, really nice wood grips, three dot sights and the trigger is very light for a production pistol.
I hope Remington sorts out R51, for now I am quite happy with this R1. |

That's awesome pinetree. You'll love it at the range. Ya know, if people only knew about the quality of the 1911 R1 Remingtons, they wouldn't have condemned Remington so brutally over the failed R51 program. Big "R" really DOES know how to build good guns. It's really marketing who caused the rush to production without proving what probably would have been a great success, but, no time for the necessary testing blew the Gen1 for them and worse... us. I'm still waiting for a successful Gen2 R51.
Oh, and like shooter says. "PICS"!!! Like I got room to talk. I'll get 'em posted. Heh-heh. |

Personally I condemned Remington, not for their firearms as a whole, but their business ethics in general on the R51. If my business practices followed their model, I would make no money and heading to the unemployment office. But yes, they do have some guns that have and will go down in history as a great firearm. I'm not anti Remington and I'm not a diehard Remington collector. I'm not loyal to any particular brand....just love guns.

It's true that several facets of the way they handled the R51 issues left more to be desired and yes, some of those practices would've put us out of business fast. Like you remmy, I'm not married to any gun manufacturer, I just love these irons I have and grew up loving the sport of shooting, and every one of them is for shooting, be it pleasure, hunting, precision target, or self defense. The latter, being a hopeful never.

Funny! In a discussion on another firearm forum, the 'look' of the R51 pistol was criticized as space gun like and too weird. Being old enough to remember the introduction of the first plastic framed pistol, the HK VP70 and then the Glock. I remember all the wailing and crying about real guns being made of steel and wood, etc. It was the similar reaction to the R51 Flash Gordon space gun, except it is all metal. The more things change, the more they don't change. |

Got my refund. If Remington can make this reliable, I'll probably pick one up again a few months after the release of the revision. I'm not going to be an early adopter/beta tester on this thing again, though I liked the gun enough not to write it off completely.
In my view, this is the perfect answer to the plastic guns. It's a superior action that forces all or most of the frame to be made out of metal. Had Remington delivered a reliable product, I suspect they would be taking market share. Instead, they rushed the gun to market, and now they are issuing refunds and scrapping guns. Hmmm.....I wonder if Remington would sell me some of the returns for cheap? R51 parts kit anyone? |

A friend from work took my new R1 home on Monday and ran 2-3 mags through it without a hitch. He has a very good eye and is such a good shot that I have him shoot all of my guns to test for accuracy and function. He said that out of the box it was more accurate than either his Colt or Springfield. Only issue was the trigger creep.

I have felt that trigger creep in a few R1s that I have handled. Don't quote me, but I think that goes away with break-in. It seems to have a friction creak that you can feel about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way to trigger break, and almost like something is flexing. I used the thick gun butter on one that seemed to make it go away. And I am waiting to take my new R1 and my Colt to the range to see which one wins. Haven't decided to shoot it or trade it yet. Waiting for my son to bring my other R51 back so I can return it for the 2nd R1, then keep the better feeling one of the two and trade the other for a Carry Commander. |
