This is my first post. I bought a Remington 788 in .308 just like the one my dad has had since i was born. His shoots so good, I want one as well. Mine is being shipped but I was wondering something after remembering the recoil of his.

Is there a current model rifle that is the same sized butt plate as a stock 788? didn't know if the flat butt 700 bdl would work or anything else. I want to get a good recoil pad for one I bought and I'm waiting for it to arrive. I thought it would be nice to be able to find one that would fit bolt on instead of grind to fit or a sleeve style.

Not sure about the size similarity of the butt stock recoil pads...

Thanks. I should be receiving the rifle on Tuesday so maybe I can measure it out pretty good and that will help.

Randy,
For much the same reason, I wanted to put a pad on a 788 7-08 for my wife. Now keep in mind we were all a LOT younger then but I had a gunsmith do it. Not that I can't cut wood or shape a pad but when someone else does it that makes a living at it, it always seems to come out a lot nicer. It wasn't that horribly expensive and I'd do it that way again in a heart beat. Welcome and enjoy your 788. I've had several and even though they don't have a lot of amenities about them they sure can shoot.
