My newly acquired Remington 1911 R1 was experiencing frustrating (to me) FTF. Of the 400 rounds with various ammo, I had a 14% failure rate. The only ammo that the gun seemed to like was the Remington L45AP4--but, this ammo is hard to find.

After contacting the company, Remington sent me new mags but no improvement. I finally emailed Remington customer service and they sent me a shipping label. They kept the gun for about a week.

The gun was shipped back to me last week and today I test fired the gun with the same ammo that was giving me fits (Winchester 45ACP 235 Gr - Target-white box).

Remington changed the slide, rear site, and screw. I don't know why they changed the rear site but I'll take it.

So what's the result? It was absolutely a joy to shoot the gun. No FTF, no FTE--nada. None. No-No. I was able to concentrate on marksmanship rather that clearing FTFs. The gun is by far more accurate than my issued Army Colt 1911 (US Army, 1965-82nd ABN). I love this piece of American iron.

Yes, I was upset with the gun at first, but now I'm glad I went with an American company like Remington. More importantly, in its present state my R1 is just as dependable and accurate as any higher end NIB 1911s.

If your R1 is having FTF/FTE problems, I say save yourself some doubts/time/frustration and send it to Remington. So far Remington has proven to stand behind its product.
