Hi, i bought my very first Remington Bolt Action rifle in 223, it is the Remington 700 SPS Tactical in 223 rem. At the start, i was very excited and happy to really tried the rifle in the range and when i finally did a chance the following were my personal observations:
1. Easy to shoot
2. A loud and a signature "bang" of the rifle every time i shoot
3. A big ball of fire every time i shoot the rifle

Notes:
*I followed the procedures of gun cleaning before and during the first day of shooting and zeroing of the rifle as recommended by the store
*I used a stoney creek platform for zeroing the rifle
*I used Barska 10-40x50mm AO rifle scope, it was checked prior to test
*I used 55 grains FMJ Winchester & 55 grains FMJ American Eagle, both factory load

Zeroing:
1. First, i zeroed it out in 50 yards easily then clean the gun
2. Just for curiosity, i tried to target it out in 200 yards hoping to just even hit the target paper, but NO LUCK
3. Then, i decided to zero it out in 100 yards

Zeroing in 100 yards, i experienced the following:
1. Very inconsistent on both elevation and windage
Windage: 1-3 in to the right and 1-2 in to the left
Elevation: 1-2 in both high and low of the center or target

2. I can hit the 0.5 moa target once in a while but not consistent and that was my frustration. i am cleaning and cooling the gun every 5 to 10 shots. At the end, i decided to run 40 rounds just to break in the barrel and will try again next time in the range.

My friends, do you have similar issues with this gun? Please provide me any information on how to correct and zero it out in 100 to 200 yards. I am very frustrated as of now.

By the way this isn't my first time to zero a rifle. i have CZ 527 & Savage Mod 11 (in all 223 of same ammo) and able to zero it with ease from 50 to 200 yards in a 0.5 -1 inch target groupings.

Please help....

What twist rate is the barrel, if it is a 1 in 12 like mine you may need a lighter bullet. If you can try some 52 gr rounds.
I am getting less than 0.5 MOA at 100 yards with 52 gr Sierra Matchking bullets on top of 24 gr of H322 and 0.3 MOA with 40 gr Vmax.

It's probably not a bullet weight vs. twist rate issue. Not with 55s....

I would first ensure that scope base and rings are rigid and tight. Back off each screw and re-tighten and count the turns each way.

Hi, the twist rate of the barrel is 1:9. The scope is tight but i will check it again. If you have more insights about the inconsistency of this rifle please let me know. Actually, i am planning to get the new one, 783, but i will wait first to resolve the present issue.

Please help.

I would also suggest NOT cleaning the rifle in between shots / groups while sighting in. Start with a clean bore, fire a couple rounds to "foul" it a bit and then begin.

It's an old hunters tale but you're never supposed to take your kill shot with a freshly cleaned bore. My own personal experience would seem that the advice does bear out some truth.

Good luck!

Friends,

This morning i tried to zero again my Remington 700 SPS Tactical in .223. Prior to that, i bought a good burris scope mount and use a tested scope for this rifle. In 50 yards, the first 5 rounds were for sighting IN then started to fine tune the rifle. My shots average was between 1.3 to 1.8 inches in group. If you look to the red circle target of 2 inches in diameter, i am seldom to get out of the circle but still i have fliers from time to time specially after cooling it down. After 100 rounds, i gave up.

Is the remington rifles needs to break in the barrel for a couple of hundreds of rounds. My co-shooter near my bench told me that. He tried my rifle and the same grouping as mine.

Please help friends.

2 possibilities that I have had happen.

1. Is the reticle loose inside the scope, and are the mount screw and ring screws tight and torqued to makers specs?

2. Is there some bedding issues with the stock and barrel channel?

Either of these issues could cause problems for ya...
