I am a newbie to bolt action rifles. I just bought a 770 .308 win, and have not fired it yet.
While working with it and checking the bolt action, I have found that the bolt really hangs up when chambering a round from the magazine. About 1" back, it requires a fair amount of force to pull back. It seems to work fine as long as I give it a strong, steady pull, but it just isn't as smooth as I would have expected.
I assume that this happens when the bolt is passing over the new cartridge in the magazine. Is this normal in all bolt action rifles, or the 770 specifically? I just want to be sure that there isn't something wrong with this rifle since it is new.
Thanks for any thoughts.
Mike

Welcome to the Remington Owners Forum Mike !!
Have you tried lubing it with some CLP...!? That plus all bolts will be a little stiff when new...I would remove it and check for any factory burrs then lube it and work the action a dozen times...it will loosen up. |

770 are entry level bolt actions, they have a lot of slop and play in them! Good luck

Like Shooter 13 said lube it.... And shoot, shoot, shoot- the firearm has to get worn in. From the bolt to the barrel. Rem oil is the best lubricant for remmys; other than slip 2000 but save that stuff for carbine actions. Once you get everything worn in you'll start to tighten up groups and find out how the firearm acts with certain positions, ammo, cleaners, shooting platforms, etc. The 770 is a good starter rifle but there is nothing wrong with that it's good enough for a hunt or target shooting. Practice with it and it can be worth more than those $2,000 rifles.

Well, I have a co-worker who has the Model 770 in .243 Winchester, and he has excellent luck with his. He can do a best 3-shot group, at 300 yards, of 2.8 inches! I would say he got a hell of a deal with that purchase. For the money he spent, to get a sub-MOA gun, is awesome.
