I'm debating if i should use this for hunting dont worry about it being old because its not in the best condition but ,its heavy(much heavier than my 12gauge mossberg500) but i dont think 12gauge is honestly needed. Should i put an aftermarket polymer stock on it if i cant find one for a 16gauge

16gauge 870 made 1955?

First, hello and glad you asked the question.
Second... is that buttstock missing a recoil pad or buttplate???? Can you actually weigh the 870 and 500 side-by-side to see how much more one weighs than the other? What type of stock and barrel length does the 500 wear compared to the 870? I cannot imagine there would be more than 1.0-~1.5-lb difference with the 870s steel receiver and wood stock given similar barrel lengths. A 1955 Wingmaster should never wear synthetic anything. I don't care what kind of condition it's in. Please be hesitant to that whole idea just to save maybe a half-pound by switching to plastic. If you simply have to hike a slightly lighter shotgun, then please carry something else entirely. But definitely hunt that factory configured 16-ga now and then just to have the memories of doing so! An ATI stock set on a 1955 16-ga Wingmaster would make Baby Jesus cry...........

WAIT....... Are you weighing just a stripped walnut buttstock for an 870 vs. just a stripped hollow recycled plastic soda bottle for a 500? Of course one weighs less than the other. Or are you feeling a BIG difference between the two complete shotguns????

Actually their both wood guys. Il compare apple to apples. The slug barrel(smooth bore) to the slug barrel(smooth bore)
And as for the ati stock on a 1955 870? I really dont care about the "vintage" of it For two reasons *i will still have the original stock put up *im not a huge fan of the 870, i much prefer the ergonomics and balance of the 500. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The 870 could feel heavier than the 500 because you might not be used to carrying it or handling it as much as the other because of slight shape differences. This happens to me when I switch from my maverick 88 to my 870 express security with all the bells and whistles.... Forend light, speed feed stock, side saddle, etc. My maverick I only use for upland and it feels super light compared to my express but there is only a pound difference. As far as the wood stock its a beaut in the ruff any carpenter can refurbish to make it look pristine. I've done it on plenty of my buddies stocks shotguns and rifles, even 1911 pistol grips. If you want to hunt with it hunt with it that's what its meant for. I have friends that hunt with $3000 dollar value antiques perfectly fine as matter of fact I would take the oldies over anything.

Well I'm keeping the stock the way it is, i took off the laquer or whatever they used because it was cracking, 3 coats of ebony finish then 4 coats on linseed oil. It looks like an antique now! I shot it yesterday for the first time and yep its getting a buttpad. The 2 shots i shot. Felt worse than 3 boxes of 3inch mag 12gauhe out of my mossberg

It used to look similar to this 2"gauge but had much more cracks. I like the change honestly
