Just bought my first shotgun. The guy said it was a police issued Remington 870 Super Magnum. I've looked around online on how to idenfiy it but the barrel heat sheild covers any marking on the barrel and i assume where the side saddle is there is marking behind it.

Is there any other things i can look at to know which 870 it is and if its an acutal Super Magnum?

If better pics could help in identifying it let me know and ill snap some more

Thanks

A picture of he other side of the receiver will tell me if it is a "super mag" or not. Also, the letter prefix and suffix of the serial number would be handy.

I do not recall Remington ever making a 870 Super Magnum Police shotgun.
this one looks like a highly tricked out 870 Express Super magnum to me....probably the "Home Defense" version they made in early 2000's.
also keep in mind that the 3.5" super magnum offering in 870's began in 1998. It did not exist before that.

How does it shoot?
take it to the range and run some light loads thru it and see how it operates.

The serial number is covered up by the heat shield and i Don't have any tools at the current place I'm staying at to remove it.

Haven't shot it yet. Might get a chance to here this 4th of July weekend and I'll report back.

Would a 3.5 shell load into the receiver if it wasn't a super magnum?

yes a unfired 3.5" shell will fit into a 3" chamber....the problem is when it is fired in a 3" chamber and opens up
This is not a good idea!!!!

I can't tell from your picture as it is to far away and blurry, sorry.

this is not a 3.5" receiver. the bolt and receiver opening is missing the extra guard used to cover the longer cut found on super mags

Even though its not a super magnum it'll serve its purpose for home defense well :D

yes sir, very much so and will last for generations.........
there is no finer pump action than a 870.....some as good mind you, but none finer!

2 3/4 buck has done a lot of good over the years! I have never had the need to go to the magnum shells in more than 25 years of duty. JMHO.

I was gonna say the same thing...very rare you would need to shoot 3 1/2" magnums at anything.
