I've been familiarizing the wife with my Stevens dbl 20ga for when I'm not around. I keep my new 1911 R1 handy for myself. The R1 is also my daily carry especially for our walks in rural Michigan.

Was using a baseball bat. But as I've gotten older my swing has very much slowed down. Switched to a WWI Colt Army M1911. Switched to a 1911 R1 a few weeks ago. Caress it every night before I go to bed. Hope my wife doesn't find out.
I don't always salute Obama, but when I do it's with one finger.

In a home defense scenario chances are you’re gonna need a “spare” hand to call the police, open doors, push kids out-of-the-way, pull kids to safety, turn on/off a light, etc. Also, Captain B’s right: it’s easier for a bad guy to grab a shotgun barrel than a handgun’s. Negotiating corners with bad guys in situ can be . . . problematic.

Home defense is NOT search and destroy. The best weapon is to be vocal (from cover) and a flashlight equipped shotgun. After training and practice, of course. IMHO.
Very few people, will maintain handgun trigger control with one hand, under stress, to be accurate. If a person then takes an isosceles or weaver stance, your weapon is at the length of a short barrel HD shotgun. Just having a weapon without training can be... problematic.

We use what we have at hand, even if it is a shotgun or handgun. There are no definite "best" weapons in every and all encounters.

A long gun can have some advantages, even if you don't have to shoot the gun. It can also be used as a weapon to strike with. When I was in the Marines, we spent more time training with the rifle as a striking weapon than we did actually shooting the gun. Rifle drill was a big thing then, maybe not so much now, but it was when I was in. I loved rifle drill, and became quite good at it. With a bayonet on the end, it could become a very effective weapon in more than just shooting someone with it. Just saying. ;)

I got 2 tactical SG to choose from, although my reliable 590 is my primary it never hurts to have a pretty damn good backup in the 870 just in case I have to shoot with both hands....lol.

Nice scatter guns! Did you install the heat shield, or did it come that way? :?:

It's an OEM heat shield but I had to install it myself. It didn't come with it.
Initially my 590 looked like the 870 on the left. Just a basic plain shotty then I added the heat shield, limb saver, corn Cobb forend, toprail, pumkin punched and hand stops.
I like the feel and look of my shotties and the reliability.

I have an H&R 1871 pump, that I would like to put a heat shield on, but I am kinda afraid to buy one and discover that it does not fit well and is cheesy.

I tried, but screwed up on the birth date question! (was not paying attention, and clicked AFTER 2002) I sent a private message to DHonovich to see if he could square away my dumb mistake. I think he is the administrator of that one. :?

Nothing fancy, just comfortably effective. R1 Commander at the ready on the night stand. Eight rounds Remington Ultimate Defense 230 grain BJHP. Locked and loaded. Pretty cheap life insurance.

I really need to get a newer photo. This is my Remington 870 as she used to look.

Image

I've winced upgraded her quite a bit. She now has a Vang Comp ported 870P barrel, stainless steel follower, Utlimate Reliability Pkg from http://www.ultimate870.com, and an aluminum Mesa Tactical side saddle shell carrier. I also have a XS Big Dot tritium sight and Elzetta flash light mount on it. I load it with #1 buckshot.
