What's your input on the QR code on the R51? Has anyone tried to scan it? I have seen pics of guns with & with out, I'd prefer it w/o. Next they'll put IC chips or SD slots in them.

It can't be QR. Doesn't have the right indexing markers. It looks like Data Matrix to me but I don't really know. I've got a ticket in to info@remington.com asking format it is but I haven't heard back yet.

Has anyone tried to scan it?
I haven't been able to get a clear enough pic of mine to scan through my Matrix Barcode app.

I might resist RFID but I don't really have an issue with a barcode. It's no different (I assume) than the arabic numerals SN engraved on it. It can't be read "remotely" any more than anything else engraved on it.

I tried the QR reader, that's a no go as you thought. It may be a Remington internal tracking code that tracks that gun thru out the assembly & packaging process.

FYI check out all the different QR codes.

The Matrix Barcode engraved on my R51 looks a whole lot like this Data Matrix style code:

Notice the indexing is done by using a border on two sides instead using three corner indexing markers as QR does.

I may have gotten a little bit better pic and I'm hoping I can find a better image reader to feed the pic to.

My thoughts as well. Regardless of the purpose, it looks weird on a firearm. Although it is certainly not a deal breaker. Wonder if we will start to see it on future Remington products...

I've been told that a similar one is beginning to show up on Taurus products.

Data Matrix Code is a two-dimensional matrix barcode consisting of black and white "cells" or modules arranged in either a square or rectangular pattern. Maybe it's a hybrid code of some sort.

Maybe. Engraved dots are "black" and open spaces are "white."

Anyway, it looks very similar.

I haven't counted the X and Y axis dots yet to know if it's the same. To be honest, I'm not familiar enough with Data Matrix to know if the X & Y are variable or not.

OK, finally got a response from Remington on this. I'll paste in the full text below but here's the two salient points:

  • It is not a QR code (but we already knew that). The response called it a "Dot Matrix"
  • It is definitely the Serial Number

Here's the relevant part of the response email:

According to our product manager, it is a dot matrix on the side of the gun and is, in fact, the serial number of the gun. It is not a QR code. It's something we use in manufacturing to scan the serial numbers so that we don't have to read them manually. Cuts down on the human error and allows us to maintain more precise record keeping on what serial numbers we have produced so we do not inadvertently duplicate them.

Just saw a Para with the same type of QR code. Para and Remington are sister companies so that makes sense.

There was speculation that Para was making the R51 for Remington.
