Hello all,

So my buddy has a 1100, probably an early 70's model by the wear and receiver scroll work, I haven't had the chance to grab the code from the barrel.

Anyhoo.. we went out shooting.. me with my fairly well maintained 1100, and him with his...

While shooting we realized that both shoot well, no difference in what loads cycle until we get to target... mine cycles about 75% without a jam, his turns into a single-shot. I'm running a 30" full choke Magnum barrel... he's running a 26" full choke 2 3/4" barrel...

Now, after shooting we disassembled his gun... which he had never done. Oh lord.

The trigger group was coated in what only looked like fine charcoal dust, caked in.
The bumper on the back of the bolt was missing (the black plastic around the hammer strike on the firing pin).
The o-ring had a crack.
The inside of the mag was gummed up.

All of this, of course, is fixable... however this is the one that concerns me.

I left the recoil fork in the receiver and went to reach in through the action port and just see how the recoil spring was moving... in doing so, my finger slid on the inner race where the rails ride and sliced me open pretty deep. I had done this on my 1100 multiple times and had not been injured.

The wear on the inside of the receiver is so bad, its not only been mechanically sharpened by the action, but it's worn down so much that the round retainer for the magazine falls out and is a b*tch to get back in.

Here's the question. Is this gun on it's last legs? Would it be wise to file down any sharp edges in the receiver? I mean, it shoots/cycles in this condition... so spending 20 bucks in parts to replace what's broken and missing is no big deal... and giving it a fine-tooth-comb cleaning should help... but with the inside of the receiver being so worn has it got 100 rounds left in it, or 10,000 rounds?

Advice, please!

In my humble opinion, there's still plenty of life in the ole 1100 and is worth "saving".

As Shooter stated, take it to a good gunsmith and let him go thru it, I think ya'll be glad you did.

The inside rails on 1100s, and 11-87s, are usually razor sharp. They are not designed for fingers to slide on. That's what old toothbrushes are for.
If your Magnum barrel is running that light a loads with no problems I would be very leery of shooting anything heavy out of it. The port(s) may have been drilled out. A magnum is not supposed/designed to run light loads, but lot of them will down to about 1-1/8 ounces of lead.
What could have happened... did.
