I have a brand new box of hornady sst ballistic tips and I was planning on using them this upcoming deer season. I had been using the Winchester soft points which did OK but I really want to drop them in their tracks. I know shot placement is key but I like to just hit the double lung shot when they're broadside. I plan on testing accuracy of them though but I have heard that ballistic tips exploded too early and they didn't do alot of damage but I've also heard people say that they are best bullets to use and that they drop them where they stand. (It's .243 win model 700 to be exact and bullets are 95g)

I've never trusted ballistic tips for larger animals. I know a lot of people do but I prefer something I know is going to retain some weight through the vitals.

So is there any round you prefer? The deer weigh between 140-200lbs and longest shot would be 200 yds with them. I have a box of the hornady sst but I don't want to lose a deer or something if they dot penetrate.

My round of choice for deer is still the Rem CoreLokt. It is accurate out of all my guns and it has never let me down.

Post up your results, I'm curious to see if they work for you.

I use the 300gr SST's in my muzzle loader and they are awesome.

I've not tried them in any rifle chamberings but I did try it in a shotgun. They keyholed pretty bad out of a smoothbore even when using a rifled choke tube. I expected as much the box does say for use in rifled barrels, but a box sort of fell into my hands and I thought I would give it a shot.

I think the SST 6mm bullet is a bit too fragmenting for a good kill if the angle is wrong. Would you pass on a deer if your couldn't get a double lung shot with a 95-gr SST?

For a perfect broadside shot it'll work just fine.

I'm probably going to end up switching to a 7mm rem mag and keep the .243 as backup but that is something to think about because I like to shoot deer in that position too but I like the broadside angle better. I do have quite a few of the Winchester soft point 100grains that ill prob just use if I end up using the .243 again but thanks for the help

I would take the .243 over the 7mm. I would just use something other than the ballistic tips. The 7mm just has too much bark for me to enjoy shooting at the range for very long. I've only ever shot one deer that was over 25 yards away from me so my needs may be somewhat different.

The .243 is a heck of a deer gun.

I have used 100 gr. Sierra spitzers for years with good results on facing and broadside shots. Like another poster said, avoid going away shots unless a neck shot is possible.
