New to the forum and foun dit when I was looking to trouble shoot a probablme with my 870.

Would like opinion on what kind of problem I have and what I should do about it. I own two 870s. One is a bird gun that is 25+ years old (Pop's) and probably has a thousand shells through it. The other is a tactical police model that is about 5 years old and that has maybe 150 shells through it. The bird gun, no matter how slowly you cycle the action , removes the spent shell and chambers the new round as smooth as oiled glass. There is one little spot about a third the way to chambering a new shell where you can feel the resistance increase just a little and then drop off, but it is still super smooth. The police model has a spot seemimgly in about the same place, where if you don't have some speed going on the pump, it will hang up, sometime enough that i have to hold the forend and bump the rubber butt pad on the deck to get it going again. I have clened and oiled it, but it still occasionally does this and the more slowly you cycle it the more it catches, but not every time (about 75% of time). If the bird gun ws doing this it would be irksome, but I would only loose a bird. With the police model which is for self defense it can't be tolerated. If I can't fingure out what and why it is doing this - and what the fix is, it will have to go.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

your chamber sounds a little tight or where the heading cut is in barrel there may be a tiny bit og metal peaned over, i'll be willing to bet on tight chamber though

I had that problem on a new 870 Express. Most people solve the problem by polishing the chamber, but I found this tube where a man just polished away a grove behind the chamber, across from the extractor. It was simple and it worked for me.

Thanks BigJohn, your above advice is spot on.

I know this is an old post, but I had the same FTE issue with my new 870 Express Super Mag.

I performed the same fix as well using a dremel; gave a light sand and polish of the breach end of the chamber right at the edge. Basically where the barrel seats into the receiver. This FACTORY BLEMISH issue is exacerbated by using low brass shells. Be sure to keep the newly polished area of the chamber well oiled after in order to prevent rust and corrosion.

It seems that a large number of newer 870 Express models are affected. There is a small amount of extra material left behind during machining that causes the shell to jam in the chamber. Due to the single extractor system of the 870, when the extractor attempts to remove the spent shell it grabs on one side of the shell only and pulls it back against this small amount of material causing a jam.

I have shot nearly a 1000 rounds through my 870 since the fix...not even one little hiccup.

TEX and ajs828, I hope you were able to remedy your issues.
