I bought my wife a remington 870 wingmaster last July, after she took an interest in trap/skeet and pheasant hunting, in 20 gauge. We shouldered a dozen guns and went with what fit her, even though it was expensive.

The manufacture code on the barrel is AC, which tells me that it was March of 2007 or 2008, just before or after Remington was bought up by Cerebus. So obviously it sat on a shelf for 4 or 5 years.

Beautiful looking gun, high gloss blueing, nice wood. Was nicer than anything I was using at the time.

Pulled it out a month ago, and the entire rib from the receiver to the bead was covered in orange rust. There was three pit marks on the barrel too.

I'm not sure what's going on here. I have a dehumidifier rod in the cabinet, plus a large tin of lockdown silica gel to absorb moisture, and it sits in a sackup gun sock.

It looked fine to the eye after cleaning it up, but today, a month later, I ran an lightly oiled rag down the barrel and the white cloth had orange all over it.

I've contacted Remington Canada, sent in the required paperwork, at which point they said they'd review and get back to me, which was over two weeks ago. Starting to feel shunned. I'll call again tomorrow, but does anyone have an idea why this is happening?

Checked all the other guns in the arsenal, and there's some oldies in there for sure, and they're all fine.

What gives?

Welcome to the forum.

Not sure what would be causing the excessive rust on just one of the guns. By chance is that the only one stored in a gun sock?.

Hi Mike - nope, there's other guns in socks as well and they're fine.

What I was really driving at with my question was "Was there a time where Remington had issues with their blueing process?" I ask because it seems to be the date of manufacture looks to be right after Cerebus bought them out.

Thanks.

I'm not sure on that. My 870 is parkerized and I had to let my 11-87 go years ago.
