my father has a cap and ball, double trigger remington long gun.

it is about 48" long. it has "remington" stamped on the side of it but no serial number that he can find.
octagonal barrel.

does anyone know the model or year this gun was made? did all remingtons have serial numbers? we though maybe the barrel was replaced and that was the reason the serial number doesn't appear in it. if there is a serial number, where should we look to find it?
