Having a hell of a time trying to get my stainless synthetic Model 7 in .308 Winchester to shoot a group. I've been shooting and reloading for over 30 years, but this one rifle is giving me fits. I have a Leupold 4.5-14 X 50mm scope on this gun. I can't shoot a group that is any better than 1 3/4" at 100 yards. I have tried factory loads and every bullet/primer/powder combination known to man. This is all with 150 grain bullets. I have floated the barrel, and the trigger is a crisp 2 1/2 lbs. I take my time between each shot, so the barrel doesn't heat up. I just bedded the action, and haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. I was thinking of trying one of those Limbsaver barrel deresonators. I am also going to try some 165 grain bullets in it. Anybody have any ideas ? I have all of my other rifles dialed in with groups of 3/4" or better at 100 yards.

Anybody experience the same trouble with their gun? I am open to any suggestions..... Thanks.

Is this using a bipod or is this poor grouping on sandbags? Either way I definitely agree something isn't right...

Thesegroups are shot off of a steady bench rest, with both the front and rear of the stock supported. Most groups end up in a triangular shape.

Do you have the original lightweight barrel or the newer, longer, fluted barrel?
I've never shot or loaded the .308, but my impression, if you have the older, lightweight barrel, would be to try a lighter bullet as the resonance of the 150 gr. might be too much for it. If you've got the longer heavier barrel, the solution may be the same, but I have no experience with it. Fwiw, I shoot the stainless/synthetic older Model 7 in 7mm-08 and shoot a 140 gr. round, but haven't shot a target in awhile so can't say for sure what groups I'm getting right now. All I can say is it's dropped seven or eight deer in their tracks out to 197 yds, including an off-hand shot out to 165 yds, so I know she's shooting pretty tight groups, but I do need to verify where things are this off-season. Since it's been nine months since your last post, how about an update on your solution? Thanks. |

A friend of mine bought a Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle (.308 Win caliber) earlier this year. His best groups have come from 168 gr match-grade ammo. The 150 gr hunting bullet loads didn't do as well. With a deer/pig rifle, if it can shoot at least 1 1/2" groups from the bench at 100 yds, that should do just fine for virtually all hunting situations.
You could also try a good scrubbing of the bore with something like Sweet's 7.62 solvent, followed by JB Non-Embedding Bore Cleaner (bore paste). You might be surprised by the amount of fouling in your rifle's bore after 'regular' cleaning. |
