I would like to see remington clean the barrels after test fire, also my new Vmax's operating handle was not pushed into place when i took it out of the box, why did they use the pro bore chokes and whats with the new names for different chokes in the camo versions?

Like the look and out line. Bought it! Couple of weeks later it jambed goose hunting, was about to toss it into the Columbia River till hunting partner said his 1100 was jaming too. Oh by the way was blizzard and zero degrees. Geese were flying ten feet off the deck twenty yard out. Wrong oil and pin was frezzing up. Heat helped. Getting home cleaned and re-oiled all is fine now. Little warmer. It shoots anything I put into it. Plan and simple!
Biggest question I have is shooting trap on the line. Want to find a shell catcher that works like the TS not interested in the wire and double sided sticky tape thing on line. I would like a simple clip. Buddys don't like getting hit in the face and like shooting versamax on trap. Is their a modifacation I can do? Drill holes wire? Right now using a rubber band but would like to upgrade:) PS have a new friend and her name is VERSAMAX! |

Congrats gibsonjtech on your new baby. I have never had any issue but i run my Vmax very dry but really clean. Even in late season goose hunts on lake ontario with temps near zero.Any load any time. Is it fast enough for you? how do you find the recoil?

Let several shoot the Max and most answers are what recoil. Gun jamimg issue was mainly wrong oil. Inspected and started shooting out of the box, had no problem with it till sitting around sand pile and blizzard. Just fine on trigger pull for being fast enough. Still looking into a shell catcher. Or to modify. Cheaper and want to shoot trap on line.

I bought the versa max earlier this year i use it for every thing. I recently been experiencing double feeding issues just wondering if anyone else has seen this, or knows how to fix this problem.

clean would be nice, I agree. The pro bore chokes are supposed to pattern heavy loads of steel shot better. I use the Pass shooting choke in mine all the time. Names of chokes is a useless addition IMO meant to appeal to waterfowl hunters, keep in mind the first and most versions of the VM was, are and continues to be tailored to waterfowl hunters mainly. Next came home defense and tactical versions. What we need first is a complete line of hunting accessories for the current VM's; especially rifled barrels! Then a 20 gauge version:) Then I want one with shiny wood furniture, Remington green anodized aluminum receiver and deep blued steel. Oh yea, this is my first post here....just found this site last night. I have posted extensively on the VM over on SGW forum, putting it through it's paces and reporting what I find. I offer this link as a addition too and resource for anyone here with question about the VM. I look forward to hanging out here and hope that i am welcome. http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewtop ... 5&t=244957 JM We have done so much for so long with so little, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing!

as in letting two shells come out of the magazine? We have done so much for so long with so little, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing!

Call remington, they have a fix/replacement part they will send you that corrects the issue. Meanwhile, open the bolt and make sure it locks back, make sure the gun is not loaded, rest the butt of the gun on a solid surface, then while pulling down firmly on the forearm, tighten the nut another click or two. It will stay put this way! JM We have done so much for so long with so little, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing!

You are correct in the method of how to tighten a semi auto shotgun barrel nut. Fairly common method, however it only will only stay tight for about 50 rounds then loose again. Glad to hear Remington has a fix. Is the new nut revised? If so what is the difference? Cheers

It is two parts, a new mag spring retainer and a new cap with smaller, more aggressive teeth. they will send them free if you call and ask. Starting around July of this year the new guns should have came with this upgrade already on them according to remington. Your Welcome SHOOTER13! Since this is the troubleshooting section for the VM, there is a few more things i know to be true if you fellows are interested. My Versa Max is a November 2010 vintage and it is original except for the modifications that I made myself as documented in all 78 pages of the link I shared above. TuJays you seem to be a Versa Max owner that likes to repair his own equipment. It seems that we are both on the same page. Glad to talk with you. Guns, Cars, Hunting not always in that order. I have been a V MAX crusader from day one so any info would be good to know. Thanks

Thanks vmax...I will be posting helpful tips i have learned soon. There are not many mind you, but most folks get frustrated way to easy, when things could have been fixed in seconds if a clear head was involved.
Most are issues that will quickly go away by shooting the gun, others i addressed to remington and they were corrected in the current offering. There are a couple of things i would still like to see, but time will tell:) Halfnutz, I will get mine out of the truck in the morning and give it a look over to see if i can detect how it would let two shells out of the mag......my first guess is a trigger group issue for what ever reason. Just so everyone knows, i am a engineer, i design build automated machinery, robots if you will! Shotguns are my passion, semi auto remington shotguns catch my fancy, and the VM caught my interest after it was bashed for a year without defense back in 2010. i bought one and proceeded to see what it was made of:) I am still proceeding! We have done so much for so long with so little, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing!

Halfnutz,
two things... first go to page 28 of your manual and find part #78 that fits in the slot of part #70. Now remove your trigger group and see if that part 78 is still in your gun? Next with the trigger group still in your hand, check and see if the curved edges of the carrier (part #67) is rubbing/making contact with the cast aluminum of the front of the trigger housing. If it is, you can polish the aluminum up using a fingernail file. We have done so much for so long with so little, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing!
|
|
If your shells hang up and won't come out of the magazine polish the sharp edge of the shell latch with a piece of emory cloth.
This will also speed your gun up and stop cycling issues. I will add here that shooting the Versa Max will polish these areas up on their own, but most people get frustrated to easily. ![]() We have done so much for so long with so little, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing!

The retaining spring will fall off during cleaning or shooting. This spring (#78) in your manual holds the carrier in place and the tube in the trigger assembly that the trigger pin goes into that holds your trigger group in the receiver.
Mine kept falling off and I almost lost my trigger pin as it keep working out. Remington prompty sent me another one, but I designed a new one that will not fall out and suggested to them a way to fix the tube so it only comes with one slot, then the spring they supply will stay put. Here is the spring I made. ![]() We have done so much for so long with so little, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing!

Here is where the carrier will hit the cast aluminum trigger housing on some guns.

Here is where you will find the "V" stamped if your gun was part of the original recall back in 2010.

The "firing pin retaining pin" that fits into the bolt; in the original design it was held in place by friction of a O ring against a vertical cut face on the bolt. This can and did cause failures and if it backed out enough it would crash into the receiver when a shell was fired.
I notched the bolt face on mine so that the O ring had a place to expand into and that solved the problem. Remington took my suggestion and dovetail cut the bolt wall instead of vertical cut and that is the upgraded bolt/retaining pin design that works perfectly now. If you get one with a vertical face it is a easy fix with a dremel tool. I will post a few pictures that will show you all what I did. Here is the pin and O ring in their proper place. ![]() Here is the notch I cut so the O ring has a place to expand into. ![]() Here is a exaggerated drawing of the shape difference between the original bolt and the new upgraded bolt. ![]() We have done so much for so long with so little, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing!
