Won an auction for what was described as a Remington 341P without the rear peep but with a vintage Marlin 355 scope. When it arrived one of the two scope mount screws was out of the hole and in the packing material. No big deal, it was going to the gunsmith for inspection, cleaning and oiling anyway.

Turns out the threads in the hole were stripped and had already been rethreaded There is not enough metal to rethread again. The smith put the screw in with “medium” Locktite, which lasted about 25 rounds before it fell out.

I like the rifle and know there is no way to restore it to a P model so I’m looking for opinions on mounting a different scope. I saw a picture of a scope mounted on a 341 with Weaver B-Square mounts but they am not sure how they were attached to the rifle. Can anyone give me some advice?

Congrats on winning the auction...

I would ask the gunsmith that inspected it the first time...tho, if I was him, I would have used the Loctite Red, if he wanted it to be permanent.

He's a very conservative fellow. Some suggestions were soldering in metal plugs in the holes and re-tapping the plug to mount the scope. My smith didn't think his shop had the capabilities to do that. I took it to another smith who said that was a possibility he would discuss with the master smith.

I saw a picture of a 341 with mounts on top of the receiver so that's another option. Still waiting to hear what the smiths have to say.
