Hi!! Actually yesterday, i had time and a place to try my new 870 supermag with the remington xtra full turkey choke. I will go turkey hunting in 2 weeks, so tried 3 different loads:

1- Federal flite control 3" #5
2- winchester supreme turkey loads 3" #6
3- Remington nitro turkey 3.5" #4

Shot 2 shotshell of each at 20, 30, 40 metres.(66',99' and 132')

The 3 performed well up to 30m, but at 40m the nitro turkey gave me 4 to 10 hits in the spine-brain.

The other 2 averaged 4-5 hits at 40. In most of the shot the center of the hits was about 3 or 4 inches left and 3-4 inches low from where i was aiming.

So knowing my gun better would have gave me better numbers probably.

I was using those targets with the turkey head on it where you see the brain and spine of the bird.

The winchester was very tight up to 25m. Federal disappointed me a little, great at 20 but spread a lot at 30 with only 5 or 6 hits. And this was the one that kicked the most, more than the nitro turkey 3.5".

I am pretty green at shooting, hunted when i was young then nothing for over 20 years. I will keep my shooting range to 30-35 yards.

Tried my H&R 28 gauge too, pretty fun, nice shotgun for grouse and rabbits. Still had many pellets at 25 yards.

I am glad to hear you found a load that your 870 seems to like. Its amazing how different similar rounds can pattern. If you can afford to I would try some others as well. Either way sounds like you have a setup that is ready to take a few Toms when the season opens up. I am going to try and get out this weekend to test my 11-87 to find out what loads it likes best for this turkey season. Keep us updated and thanks for sharing.

Friday may 4th was opening day for turkey here in Quebec. Hunted by a christmas tree plantation close to the forest. Was in position at 5:30 am, it's raining, saw 6 deers by 6:30.

Finally at 6:55 i saw a hen about 60 yards, crossing the plantation towards the forest. I called her and she turned around and talked with me for 3 or 4 minutes.

Then 2 more hens joined her about 50 yards. A minute later i see three jakes following behind.

Then they all start to walk towards the woods, i had a shot at the last one, 43 yards away.

So i got my first turkey ever on the first morning of the hunting season, very happy!!
