Sneak Peek: Remington Threaded Model 1911 R1 Enhanced

Posted by Jorge Amselle. Author Archive ยป

With interest in suppressors growing exponentially, Remington has just announced that they will be selling their Model 1911 R1 Enhanced .45 ACP pistol with a threaded barrel.

Remington, which originally produced 1911 pistols for the U.S. military during World War I, now offers a classic version as well as their Enhanced version for the more tactical minded.

The Threaded Enhanced R1 has many of the same features of the Enhanced including front and rear slide serrations, a beavertail grip safety with a checkered memory bump, a combat hammer, an anodized aluminum match trigger, a wide thumb safety, a flat mainspring housing checkered at 20 LPI, and custom grips.

Different is the match grade stainless barrel that has been extended to include the threads for a suppressor and the new fixed raised sights to allow for aimed fire over an attached suppressor. Each pistol will also include two, eight-round anti-friction magazines with bumper pads. Look to a future issue for a full review of this new pistol. Remington.com.

At some point in the near future, I thinking of buying an R1 Enhanced with a threaded barrel...

Does anyone know a good holster that will accommodate the front site? Looking for a traditional leather holster with belt loops that could be used for IDPA unless there's something else that works well.

Hi, all.

Sorry, but my first post to the forum isn't a positive one. First trip out with a new (but cleaned and lubed) R1 Threaded Barrel. The rear sight was visibly off to the left out of the box, but I figured I'd make sure at the range. Sure enough - shot nice groups, but consistently well to the left. Some feeding problems with both mags using American Eagle 230gr FMJs, but I expect them to work themselves out as it breaks in. I have to say I'm most disappointed that a $1200 pistol would ship with the sight like that.

I also took another new .45, a Glock 21C, and it performed flawlessly and was dead on.

Sad that the soulless Austrian machine shot so much better, but the 1911 still feels better in my hand. I'll perusing the advice on break-in period and I guess I need a boresight and a sight pusher...

Took it to Sterling Arsenal in Sterling, VA and Luis had me fixed up inside of 30 minutes. The barrel wasn't fitted (at all) and the rounds were snagging. He polished it all up, adjusted the sights and it ate up a few mags of the AE FMJ without complaint. Also fired it with an AAC TiRANT just like the one I have in ATF purgatory and it was SWEET!
