Hey Alex, what do you intend to do with your 700?

Target, long range center of mass, hunting?

For under 500...
- Millet,
- bushnell (if your willing to go up a bit, a bushnell 4200 elite tactical 6-24x50 can be had for $650),
-SWFA fixed power (incredible scopes from what I hear)

A nice fixed power, around 10x, is a great choice for all range torso sized targets.

In that price range, you won't find awesome glass in high magnification scopes. So look for good reticles, and repeatable adjustments and controls.

The bushnell elite tactical (3200/4200 series) scopes will have the clearest glass for that price range from what i'vd heard.

My millet LRS 6.5-24x56 35mm ($450) is HUGE, bulky, heavy, not the clearest at high mag. But has a nice mildot reticle, and decent adjustments for the money.

Vortex scopes are very nice too, I love my viper PST ffp to death.

Just save for a good scope and do it right the first time.

I have this scope on my R-25. I have had no problems with it. Clear glass easy to sight in. Ability to reset windage and elevation without messing up your zero. And Mil-dot.

That's basically what I did.

So I would look in to the bushnell elite tactical line to hold you over. Until you are ready to spend.

If I were to do it over again, I'd probably go with the 10x fixed power bushnell instead of the millet I went with

Before I got my Leupold Mark 4 for my rem700Police in 300 win mag I had a 4.5X14X40 Nikon Buckmaster with a simple crosshair reticle. I could have got the mildot for about the same price of $299.00 brand new. I did clover leaf groups at 100 yds and all sub MOA out to 550 yds best 3 shot groups at 550 were 2.5 inches
Nice thing about the scope is the elevation reticle is finger adjustable to change from 100 yds to 550yds. I haven't gone any further as the range I have been praticing at only goes to 550 yds.
You don't have to spend a lot on your scope to begin.
My new Leupold Mark 4 6.5X20X50 Mil Dot M1 turets adj 1/4 MOA was only $1199.00 brand new at Cabelas, I got the M4 rings for $129.00 I got them to give me $100.00 off, the scope regular price was $1299.00 and $20 off the rings regular price $149. The optics are excellent and my groups are one bullet hole almost through the other at 100 yds. tightest groups I have ever shot. I shoot a 225gr Hornady BTHP with 71gr H-1000 powder and Win MRP and winchester Brass, FPS 2650
I love my rem700Police and Leuplod Mark 4 scope
