Dog229 Here,
I came across a 1954 870 12g with 28" mod fix barrel with original wood small comb forearm and 13 3/4 stock. Taking this apart for cleaning i found that the mag tube has a steel follower that is a inch long and the wood dowel for three shot only where still installed. My question is this follower made for a certain purpose ( i seen online a add from the 1954 that spoke of a lightweight 870 which includes a wooden dowel and two mag followers which one is 12 oz. which comes with the gun when bought new) like is it used for short shell ammo like the barrel is stamped saying for 2 3/4 or shorter.
I have never come across this before and would like for someone to put me straight with the steel follower and what is short ammo and when is this used for in hunting?
I also have seen that the early fix choke barrels are really made good and the pattern is great being mod or full. Should i have chokes installed or could i have it shortened to 20" for home defense maybe?
The gun ran me $180. and the blue is 80% and the wood is real nice to. Should it be kept original or would changing it lower the value maybe?
Thanks guys!
