Does it have a serial number? I'd call Remington Customer Service with any number you can find and ask them.

I sent a picture to David at Remington and he believes it is a W, A, which would put it at August of 54, which he also said was the first year they had the grooved receiver as an option, he thinks. The last markings he thought, might have been from the rifle being sent back to the factory for repair and marked showing that. But, he was not positive. So, I'm not really sure that was all that much help, but its kind of fun trying to figure it all out.
I also asked about the fact that there is no serial number on the rifle, and he said it predates the requirement.
Thanks for your suggestion of contacting them. Any idea how to get a picture on this forum that is kinda screwy? Thanks. Here is a picture of what's on the other side of the barrel.

Good news, but I think he was reaching. I've never seen barrel stampings or roll-marks on a Remmie that were so far "off the mark". I can see where he might think the second one could become an "A", but the edges look pretty well defined for me to think it is exactly what it looks like, and that's not an "A".

As far as pics, most of us use a photo hosting site like Imgur. Photobucket was the big name years back, but they've since gone to a pay-per model.

Okay. So the picture I tried to post this morning didn’t work. I’ll try again this evening. As far as the marks then, what are you thinking?

Good morning, Also the barrel has a dove tail rear sight. Was that standard for the 550-1? It is missing the rear sight, if anyone knows where to get one, I would like to know. Thanks.

Those look more like proof marks, perhaps from an overseas government that had the rifle as a training weapon. The one that looks like a capital "I" is curiously missing both top right arm and bottom left arm, but precisely enough not to think it's just a work stamp or roll-mark. The closest font I find is this "ᶴ" Modified Letter Small Esh. Numrich only lists two screw-on rear sights (https://www.gunpartscorp.com/products/87220B) not any using a dovetail.
