I have an 870 Express with a 28" barrel and would like to extend it 2" and have a full choke. I've found chokes/extensions close, but not what I'm looking for. Any suggestions?

Its going to be hard to find an extended choke that is 2" unless you buy a turkey choke or a tactical choke. I use Trulock Chokes.

I like that the Trulock chokes are clearly marked allowing for easy identification of the choke. This is quite a contrast from the Mossberg Accu Chokes that come with a Mossberg 930 Autoloader. Installation: Simply remove your existing choke with a choke tool and install the Trulock choke with a snug fit. Use: Not only are these chokes great looking but they are extremely functional. They do exactly as they are designed to which is all that you can ask for from a choke tube. After throwing lots of lead down range with these chokes I am extremely pleased with the results and would highly recommend these to anyone looking for a choke tube. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Before I ask – just FYI – I’m not an idiot, just very little experience with shotguns. I like trap shooting, but always rented & didn’t ask questions. Now that I own – I also do the occasional turkey shoot. Anyway …
For trap and/or turkey shoots – is there any reason I couldn’t use a turkey choke (I assume is for hunting) and/or a tactical chokes? I have notice in my searches that they would accomplish my goal of adding 2” to my barrel, but have a fear of looking foolish at the trap range. As always – any insight is appreciated |

For skeet/trap/sporting clays a turkey choke would be far to tight and would make it very difficult to break the birds (clays). The chokes help you adjust how the bird shot patterns; for far shots you want a tight choke so that the bird shot will have enough power to break the bird at distance and for close shots you want a choke that spreads the bird shot quicker. Now what is your reasoning behind wanting to extend your barrel 2"? I shoot skeet/trap/sporting clays regularly with my Mossberg 930 autoloader with a 28" barrel and the chokes that I posted above. A 28" barrel (+1" with the Trulock chokes) is ideal for an pump/autoloader.

just to meet local requirements for the local turkey shoot, and to have the best advantage possible. their max is a 30" barrel, and nothing tighter than a full choke. it's not very important to me, so I can't justify spending $100 for a custom choke, but I can't imagine there's not something already made to suit my needs.

I have tested the TruGlo Strut Stopper Extreme Turkey Choke and that definitely adds 2" to your barrel. So that should suite your needs as far as turkey hunting goes. As for the clays I would really give the Trulock chokes a try before getting custom 2" chokes made. They are approximately 1" longer.

Also, another reason I was aiming for (no pun intended) a 30" barrel was all the shotguns listed as being for trap shooting have 30" barrels. Do you know the recommended choke for trap shooting? The range I go to has the 5 stands and I don’t remember the distances. There are 3, I use the closer ones and am able to hit about 50% on a good day. I don’t feel too ashamed about that – as I’ve only shot about a dozen times in my life, never had training, and besides - practicing is fun, and now cheaper with my own shotgun
I can't find a website for TruGlo chokes - is anyone aware of one? The chokes I'm able to find online appear too tight for what's allowed where I go – nothing tighter than a full choke. I don't turkey hunt - I just do the turkey shoot of targets. |

Most 30" barrel shotguns are over/unders but for pumps/autoloaders they use 28" barrels. There are some companies like Browning that you can get a autoloader in 30" but its a rarity out on the coarse. For trap I usually uses a "improved modified" or "modified" but some use "full" chokes. So if I was you I would order a Skeet 1, Skeet 2, Improved Modified and Full (or Extra Full depending on how they classify what the tightest you can go is).

Remington makes and has made hundreds of thousands of 30" barrels. Used barrels without choke tubes and a full choke are cheap. Since you said no choke tubes, and no choke tighter than Full, that eliminates all those special turkey chokes. That would be the cheapest route. The extra 2" gains you nothing; it's the choke that determines the pattern. A used Remington 28" or 30" barrel would work fine. For most clay sports you would want choke tubes so you can tailor the gun to the situation. Trap is usually shot with chokes of Modified to Full depending on the yard line.
What could have happened... did.
