I'm waiting on my background right now but once it comes back I'm picking up a new r51 and from what YouTube is saying is it generally likes heavier bullets. So I'm wondering what everyone uses for range or self defense. I understand it has a break in period but I have a bunch of American Eagle 124 grain and hoping running 100 through it should start it off pretty good.

Thanks, I picked it up today and I have a bunch of 124 grain American Eagle and some IMI stuff. But I'll be on the look out for some 147 as well.

I can't speak on bullet weights, but it does run better/smoother with higher power ammo (keep in mind it's rated/designed for +p). Even 100-115 grain works fine with mid-high powder charges.

I think it's not so much the bullet weight itself as that most 115gr is generally cheapest and part of the cheapening process is minimum powder load. sales & marketing, customer expectations, etc

I have 150 rounds through mine, all Remington UMC 115 grain FMJ. No problems at all.

I had mine out yesterday and tried some 124 gr Win White Box NATO. It stovepiped, nosedived, and ejected live rounds.

Update- I also ran a couple of mags of Fiocchi 115 grain FMJ with no problems.

Red,
First, the R51 is not usually picky about ammo. not mine anyway. Second, I do not subscribe
to the "Youtube Reviewers, unless their name starts with Hickock45 or gunblast.
Some of us R51 owners had a magazine problem and between us we figured it out.
There is no break in period that we know of. Just remember, when you get your R51,
Read the book. Especially the section on loading your gun.
Good shooting.
