As a Marine Fighter Pilot...he flew 149 combat missions in two wars...WWII and Korea.

As a Test Pilot and Astronaut...He was the first American to successfully orbit the Earth.

And...As an American Icon...He was the longest-serving United States Senator in Ohio history.

Good to mention Shooter. I recall being in elementary school and listening to the progress of his flight on my Silvertone 6 transistor radio I brought to school. The space orbit was a real big deal as I recall back then. Still got that radio by the way. Just wished it still worked!!
