I learned that I need a stronger scope if I want to go beyond 100 yards.
I have confidence I can eventually get a tight group with more practice. I'm almost ready for the Zombie Apocalypse!

I have a 783 compact in .308. It shoots 1" groups at 200 yards with a 4x scope. The action, feeding, and trigger pull is smooth and crisp. They are exceptionally good rifles.

For a rank amateur like me to be getting shots like this tells me that he rifle is a big part of the equation. I have a question for you. What kind of scope did you mount on your 783? I don't know a lot about scopes and I mounted a cheap 3-9X40. There's no way I could see what I was going to hit at 200 yards. I'm curious to know what you have. |

I have a Swift Optics 4x32 compact scope on it. It's compact size compliments the rifle well. I'm a former lever action guy, so I like the compactness of carbines. I like the compact scope for it's eye relief also. This is a high quality scope on sale now at opticsplanet.com for $60:
http://www.opticsplanet.com/swift-4x32m ... -668m.html It's a shame that you didn't ask earlier, as the scope was down to $43 at one point. But it's still an amazing deal. They also sell the 3-9x40 & several other models there too. I like the compact scope for it's eye relief also. I was able to get 1/2" groups with my setup at 200 yards, bullet holes were touching, not 1" as I previously stated. I'm not really an accurate shooter, but the clarity and crispness of this scope made it easy. As far as hunting, I would never imagine a normal hunting situation that I would shoot over 100 yards, but my range has 200 & 300 yard distances set up, so I figured I would see what the rifle is capable of (bench rest), so I tried 200. Didn't try 300. |

Wow! You must have great vision to see out to 200 yds. I have to dial up the mag at 100yds to 9x to see the target well. I was thinking that I needed at 12x+ to shoot 200 yds.

I put one on those " round stickers on the bulls eye and it's barely looks like a spec at 200 yards in the scope. That's best. Too much magnification causes wondering of your shots. Try using the lowest magnification possible. Remember the old saying: Aim small, miss small. |

I never heard that before...I'm a total newbie w guns. In fact, I've never fired a handgun yet. Aim small, miss small. |
