I purchased a Remington wooden stock which was sold as a Police/Riot stock. Everything looks good but there is one concern which is a stamping. The stock is stated to be for a 12 or 16ga. That sounds right but the stampings are as follows, it has 870 on the area that attaches to the receiver (not sure what that flat spot is named). What has me thinking is that under that area, where it has the trigger guard gap (unfinished area) it has "20" stamped on it. I don't have an 870 receiver available to me to verify if it is a 12ga compatible stock.
I wanted to ask if anyone has any information to share with me regarding this stamping or the size interchange on the 870 gauges. Is it possible this stock shipped with a 20 gauge but on a standard 870 receiver frame the 12/16/20 gauges would use the same stock interface sizing?
Thanks for any information you all can provide. I can show a picture if that would help, the listing is currently still on ebay as well but I am not sure if I can link to the item number, besides they expire over time and don't help people down the road. I searched Google but could not come up with anything as "stampings" returns all barrel proof marks due to the high number of forums having had those questions asked over the years.
Thanks,
Sean

There are two different size receivers. The "standard" 12 gauge size which has also been made in 16 and 20 gauge, and the LW size which has been made in 20, 28, and .410 sizes. These sizes include the 3" Magnum chamberings in 12 and 20 gauge. That's it. Therefore there are two different sized buttstocks as far as the receiver mating area is concerned.
Anything is possible. I have seen stocks with a '7' and an 'R' stamped there that I remember, and all sorts of two digit numbers, but mostly they did appear to be gauge identifiers. What could have happened... did.

Thank you for getting back with me. I am going to go with 20 being the gauge but it is the standard size. Not sure why they would mark the gauge as 20 unless it were the LW size.
