Hi all,
just bought a R1 1911 S and one was looking for outside the waste Kydex holster that would fit. Either a tight fit a Kydex that would click into place or a nice leather holster that's has good retention. Any suggestions? I'm looking for something that would cost about $40-$50.
Thank you,
Nick.

I'm looking, too, Nick. I have a new R1 Commander and have been looking for a pocket holster. May have to go for an Inside the Waistband (IWB) model. I need something that hides well under baggy clothing since we don't wear too many cold weather clothes here in SW Florida. If you haven't already shot your new R1S, you are surely in for a treat! And BTW, welcome to the Forum, from another new guy!

Thank you, Shooter! Whew! What a treasure trove of possibilities. I've been researching the list since yesterday. Some of these I've already seen, but there are many I've not. Seems the lesser-known vendors have the higher quality goods, too. At least to my eyes it seems so. Thanx again!

I've purchased about $500's worth of holsters in 2014 trying to find the most: (1) comfort; (2) conceal-ability; (3) re-stowing safety; and (4) ease of draw, all in one holster. Cost was not a factor since it involves so many facets of function from the start of the day until the last thing I do before 'sawing the logs'. I "carry" every hour of every day as it is a "do or don't" thing. Either you carry... or you don't. To me, it is a serious commitment and responsibility. I don't need an element of discomfort or unsure function to be added to my thought processes in the event of the "need to draw". As I speak, I carry my Sig Sauer P938 in a Blackhawk Size 7 IWB Nylon holster (pouch, if you will) with plastic belt clip and NO retention strap. For my 1911 Gov't models, it's the same type as the Blackhawk, except it is the Uncle Mike's Size 1. They both have a suede-like exterior that really grips my skin AND the inside of my jeans or slacks. I carry in "Condition 1" and "appendix" position and can walk, sit, bend, & stoop with total comfort and confidence. It stays in place while I'm driving as well, even on long road trips. All the high-end holsters I tried, had comfort issues or some sort of snag issue, so there they sit, in a rather large old range bag where they'll probably stay until my will is read. Bottom line is, the Sig rides in a $15 holster and the 1911s ride in a $10 one. And no squeaks! Go figure!

I went through the above list searching for holsters before I even purchased my Carry Commander. I ultimately wound up buying the 2 set IWB package from Alien Holsters. One for the Carry Commander and one for my S&W 39-2. Took a few weeks to get them, but the holster fit for both weapons is perfect. Surprisingly perfect. The holsters are also surprisingly comfortable to wear. Can't tell you're even wearing one. I also had a couple of leather Triple K OWB holsters I'd purchased a few years back for the 39-2. One of them is a cross-draw. The Carry Commander fits both very well. I wore the cross-draw holster to the range this morning to fire my Commander for the first time. Very comfortable while sitting in the car.

Still wearin' my $10 & $15 pouch style IWBs for my Compact P938 and Full-size Colt 1911... Just sayin'....

My holsters are all OWB and lately I have been thinking about the IWB style of holsters. Not trying to hijack the thread, just a quick q. How much larger of your pants size would you buy? I personally have been looking at Alien Holsters, heard a lot of good about them.

I haven't purchased larger sized pants just to wear an IWB holster. I have a 38" waist and some pants are made a bit looser (or tighter) than others. The Alien holster fits inside all but my older jeans (which have gotten tighter through the years) - you would just have to check each pair of pants you own, I think. |

Regarding change pant size for IWB carry Unless you wear your pants so tight that you cannot get your hand between your pants and your body, then you may need to get the next size bigger. A general rule is if you can get your hand between your pants and your body (without your belt on) then you are good to go for an inside the waistband holster, you may not need to buy new pants. But some people find it more comfortable going a size bigger. There is no correct answer here, it depends on you. Experiment, see what works. |

At 178 lbs, 5'11", and a 36" waist, most of what I wear is a 35" waist size. Cargo shorts are 34". But even with the 34s on, those pouch style Blackhawk & Uncle Mikes allows me to carry comfortably, my P938 AND my full size 1911s. Those pouches are so thin, yet strong & durable, that the only thing that has to fit is the bulk of the pistol I'm carrying. I have purchased (and still have) about six different IWB holsters and I'll try them out from time to time, but still, there's no room for their bulk. Not to mention that a couple of them pinch like Vise-Grips when I try to sit down while packin'. With my build & stature, I comfortably wear IWB between 1 & 2 o'clock (appendix carry) and frequently I have to feel around to make sure it's still there. It's THAT comfortable and the pistols don't try to slip or crawl out. Even my super-slick old Remington Model 51. That one is so old that the sight crowns are rounded from carrying on the ranch in a leather OWB for many years. Holster = Comfort, retention, and ease of draw. All cheap & simple! All the money I've spent on holsters and the 2 least expensive ones ($10 & $15) serve me the best. Go figure!

Yes sir...anyone who has carried concealed for years is sure to own a box of holsters with one or two that get the most wear time of the bunch...

But the BEST I can suggest is a Safariland 6378 paddle style if you are looking for OWB with actual retention. GTG.

I agree. I carry my S&W "N" frame .357MAG in a Safariland 568-12 Paddle style and it is sweet for those walk-a-bout, ATV, or horseback hog hunts. It is a great holster! |

I have the Bianchi Carrylok 82 OWB. It makes carrying my R1S so comfortable! Love it!
