Say Gang, does anyone know anything about manufacturing changes to the R1 magazines? When I bought my Commander last December it came with two mags with stainless steel followers. I've bought several more since then, also with the stainless followers. This weekend I've been shopping again and have noticed a couple curious things. On E-Bay I found some for sale and on the back of the package it's printed: "Redesigned follower manufactured from high impact, modified, tough, lubricated nylon with a metal insert". So I also looked at Remington's website and sure enough, I found the same thing.

This may be just a minor thing, but I really detest "plastic" in my firearms. Anyways?

I dont own a remington 1911, but I do have 3 from other makers. In my nighthawk, and les baer, I use wilson 47 mags, the followers are plastic. They are the only mags I use. The third is a 1916 built colt that doesnt get shot, still have the three colt mags with it.

A plastic follower might be an improvement. The Remington magazine are a little on the crude side, they work fine in my R1 but caused repetitive problems in a Ruger 1911. The Ruger magazines functioned just fine in the R1.

I guess I haven't yet experienced anything crude about the R1 mags. So far all the ones I've bought operate flawlessly. Anyways, as regards the original question, I received an e-mail from Remington on the matter yesterday. I'm supposing the 7-round mags still have stainless followers, but apparently they've gone to nylon for the 8-round mags. Here's what they sent:

Good Morning,

We make 2 different kinds of magazines for the R1.

F402691 1911 MAGAZINE ASSEMBLY, 7 ROUND, BLUE $29.99
F404090 1911 MAGAZINE ASSEMBLY, 8 ROUND, BLUE w/ nylon follower $34.95

Please feel free to contact our Parts Department at 800-243-9700, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, EST, Monday through Friday, and any of our representatives would be glad to assist you with your credit card order.

There we have it. Curiosity abated now.
