Hello, I went to the range yesterday and shot about 50 rounds on the Remington 783 .308 and went to clean it after getting back and noticed that the trigger guard (made out of plastic) rear bolt hole was split in the middle, you can see the hairline split, I called Remington since the rifle still under warranty, and talked to Kyle, he said that the part is not covered because a lot of people over torque the bolts and break it and that I would have to send the rifle in so a Tech can look at it and determine if it would be covered or not. I told Kyle that in order to clean the rifle properly you have to take the trigger guard off and on to put it together and that I had looked for the torque specs for the Rem 783 in the owners manual and there are none. I did a search on the net and there was nothing but conflicting information as far as the Rem 783 and torque specs. I also told him that the part was made out of plastic and it appears to be a problem and that I was pretty sure I wasn't the only one having this issue, and that this should be covered by the warranty. Kyle basically told me me Remington will not send me the replacement part so I can fix it in about 2 seconds, and that the bill was gonna be on me on a 4 month old rifle. I emailed their HQs in the hope that they will read my email and offer me some kind of satisfaction. I also told them that in the event that there is no satisfaction, they would loose me as a customer. I like the rifle and shoots awesomely with my reloads but as far as customer service Remington is below my expectations.
UPDATE:
I just got a reply to my email , the gun is still very new? how long does it take to add parts to the parts list? Jeez I'm not the best speller but I use the built in spell checker, specially on company emails. I purchased the "gun" 4 months ago and of course I provided the serial number.
Reply from Remington:
The part is not currently listed on the parts list as of yet because the gun is still very new.
As far as the warranty it is two years from date of purchase for the orginial owner
If you have the serial number we can set it up for the gun to come in a be evaulated. I will also give you the product number in case you are able to find it through a parts dealer outside of us.

Sounds pretty sad to me Herb. Should just issue a new or fix your rifle for free. Never heard of these issues when company just made the 700 line. I know changes had to be made to keep company profitable but think things go too far with subpar parts. Had an experience with my Ruger American magazine not feeding last round but at least I was given a new one free of charge. Hope your problem is remedied.

Hello, thanks for your comment. I have 3 other Remington rifles and I like all of them, the 783 is a good rifle and it shoots well, but I noticed they are using plastic in the trigger guards, there is no way plastic is going to last much on a rifle specially if is in the trigger guard area, the rear bolt needs to be torque to spec which is 35 in-lb. according to Remington tech, it also retains the rear portion of the action and takes quite a pounding when the rifle is fired, they placed a harder plastic insert (in the bolt hole) to provide more support to the bolt, but still because the trigger guard fit is not snug on the stock, it splits the rear portion, wish I could post a picture you can see it clearly. I will keep at it, I really like the rifle and have invested quite a bit in it (accessories). It fires just fine but that just bothers me.
I have been looking at the Remington Short Action 783 Detachable Bottom Metal (http://shop.pacifictoolandgauge.com/ind ... ud6kj49mb2) Seems to be a good solution to the plastic trigger guard issue, requires the mags to go with it (http://www.brownells.com/magazines/rifl ... 41006.aspx) I kind like the 10 rounds. UPDATE: I searched for the trigger guard replacement but so far no luck, I got a temporary fix but I really like a permanent one. I measured the trigger guard bolts distance and looks like is approx. 2.9.025 " from bolt(s) center to center does anyone knows what is the distance on a Remy 700? does it change with different models? maybe I can fit a 700 metal trigger guard to the 783. UPDATE: decided to go with an MDT SLL chassis, hopefully that will fix the issue with the mags being loose, and the rear trigger guard bolt hole being split and I think is going to look fantastic, I made a few hot reloads and took it to the Range last week and got outstanding groups, I think I'll be keeping it for a long while. I also had a recoil reducer device (KDF) put on it and works like a charm. |
