When stuck hunting in my home state I am confined to shotgun for deer and was hoping someone out there could recommend a brand which is known to hold a tighter pattern than others. I like buckshot as I primarily hunt in dense woods where my shots are confined to 25 yards or a bit less. Only got a 24 inch tube which don't do my patterns any favors. have heard Carlson makes a screw in Coyote Choke which is suppose to deliver tighter patterns at longer ranges and may consider it. My gun has full, mod, and imp. cyl. choke tube.

A reply!!! Will wonders never cease. Thanks Shooter. Brand of ammo which is known to keep a tighter pattern than others would be nice. Have tried the Federal 2 3/4 which are not too bad. I know Foster slugs can be used in smoothbores with cyl. choke but grouping is nothing to brag about.

I was patterning this ammo from my Mossberg 590A1 9-shot 12 gauge 3" chamber 20" heavy barrel with excellent results at 25-35 yards...

...and the cost of it doesn't break the bank: ( have bought 4 250 round cases in the last two months )

A savings of at least $100 per case from any other manufacturer...

What are you paying for the Federal 00 Buck...?

Any 00 Buck local or on line is at least $1.00 per round...not including shipping / tax

I seem to recall a few years ago reading a article about chokes with buckshot. If I remember, the author recommended nothing tighter than mod with buckshot. He had fliers with full choke. We were stuck with shotgun slugs only here in NY, until a few years ago. Couldnt use buck shot either. Quite a few counties now allow rifle. Ive tried the estate buck that shooter mentioned, it shot pretty good for me , also.

Thanks for input hammer. Will try Estate buckshot with Mod. or Imp Cyl. and see what the results are. Shot a deer 2 seasons back at maybe 20 yards away {broadside shot] and only 1 pellet hit the muzzle area. Using the Winchester copper plated stuff. We found her luckily about 30 yards in thick brush. Luckily the one pellet was enough. Think I paid about $6 for the Federal 2 3/4 stuff.

Seems I may be in luck after all. Midwest gun supply lists slug barrels with rifle sights of for use with Foster slugs. Checked last year and were sold out. Seems this is the best way to go. Thanks again for advice.
