i recently just bought my first shotgun(first gun in general) and was told by the sales people i talked to that it could handle shooting duck, turkey and deer. they said i would just need to swap out the choke. my buddy told me that it the barrel isn't rifled, then it won't be good for shooting deer...or as accurate. i did some research before hand and it came down to the Moss 500 and the Remington 870 and i, obviously, went with remington. i don't feel as if i made a mistake, just want to get things cleared up.

can i shoot and kill a deer with this smooth barrel?
is it a big difference between smooth barrels and rifled barrels?

You can shoot the forster slugs via a smooth bore with little problem. It will depend on how well you can shoot the gun.

I have shoot 2 inch groups at 50 yes with the old rifled slugs. These were Federal brand ammo, issued to us many years ago. One can also use buckshot at closer distance, depending upon your state laws and terrain.

Rifled barrels are used normally with the sabot slugs so popular these days.

Yet another option for you is the purchase of a rifled barrel if you are not happy with the accuracy given with the present barrel.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Does any one know if Remington has corrected any issues with the 870 express tactical models. Specifically the magpul editions. Do they know polish the chambers? Have they started using solid extractors? Was there any recalls pertaining to any of these issues? I have just purchased a Magpul 870 and have been reading all the issues. I'm a little concerned!

I have had really good luck with rifled slugs. Try as many brands as you can and you will find one the gun likes. I was shooting 4 to 5 inch groups at 100 yards with my last 870. I have not tried my supermag yet.

Reading about potential problems with a firearm as possible as the 870 can be a lot like trying to diagnose your own medical symptoms on the internet. Have you actually experienced any issues with your gun?

I did not wait to experience any issues as this is a self defense weapon, I replaced and polished the extractor, all springs to heavier, safety, follower and spring, and polished the chamber my self. I put is a lighter trigger pull spring. All parts are the same as the police and wing master except that those have a steel trigger housing! Put about 100 rounds through it of all ammo types and no issues!

Wow. Two inches at fifty is most certainly good enough for deer. Both of my shotguns are smooth bores with just the standard "modified" bore. I have about four or five boxes of the rifled slugs, but have never shot any of them through my guns.

You can shoot slugs out of your 870 as long as you do not have a choke smaller than modified in it .
