Hello all. Where do we get our ammo? What's your favorite ammo for deer hunting, and how much are you paying for it?

Hi, Buck. Most of my ammo comes from Cabela's. Sorry, but I'm not a deer hunter, however, I have pistols that need fed. I have a Cabela's Visa Card that I use to pay most of our bills, pay it off monthly, let the points pile up, then use them to buy ammo. I watch carefully for sales and free shipping and can usually get .45 ACP ammo for 40 cents or less per round. Since Cabela's has no Florida stores I also evade the sales tax. Works for me anyhow.

That's a pretty good plan, Major Dad. I do the same thing, but I usually use my points for things I can't find around here. Cabela's has excellent deer hunting clothing and some hard to find items, but I find their ammo expensive. Now that they have a store here in NY, I don't make out on the sales tax either. I am discovering that if I shop around here locally, I can find ammo out of season, or early in the season that's cheaper than most online or major retail outlets. If I wait too long, however, it's all gone. There appears to be more ammo on the shelves of stores now than there was a year or two ago. Am I wrong in that?

I would agree with that, Buck. Here in Florida ammo seems to be getting more plentiful on shelves, the calibers that we shoot anyways. We don't own rifles anymore, so I've not paid close attention to prices here. When we lived in Ohio I'd watch the rifle ammo sales both on-line and at LGSs. Our main calibers were .22 LR and .30-30 Winchester. Before the big .22 drought we had stocked up mightily when Remington 525-round boxes were still going for about $20. It seemed eerily prophetic, because shortly after that .22 LR became as scarce as hens teeth. .30-30 was still fairly plentiful and could be found on sale for as low as $10-12. If I find ammo in stores that works out cheaper than on-line I'll buy it. Maybe I'm a skin flint, but I like sale prices, free shipping and no sales tax if I can get around it. Anyways, that's in the past. Our son now has all our long guns and he deals with that ammo.

Been buying most of my ammo online...when it can't be found at the local gun shows.

I hand load except 22 obviously !! I can get 500 .45 for 95 dollars I use time group crazy hot stuff so I only use 5.5 grains and primers are cheep !!! .50 Cal are 80 cents 357 magnum 32 cents 308 are 13 cents for 1900fps but sierra 175 grain are 75 cents most bullets here cost between 1.50 and 15 dollars each factory !!! I can hand load for 30 cents to 1.25 so it's a big savings

Gander Mountain always matches Academy's price for the 500-round cases of Remington UMC .45 ACP in 230-grain FMJ for the range at $209. Otherwise I order from Midway. They usually have my Norma TAC-22 and .32-20 in Remington 100 grain. So, the .380AUTO, 9mm, .38SPL, .357MAGNUM, .22WinMag, and .308WIN comes from Midway also to get a few more pounds per dollar when I have to pay shipping. It pays for the gasoline & wear-n-tear on my vehicles and the wear-n-tear on me trying to lug 100-150 lbs of ammunition every time I walk in to Gander.

A hodgdon man, other than power pistol(alliant), I could survive quite nicely on just hodgdon powder.
