I've owned my versamax sportsman a year now and up until recently, I was able to unload the shotgun by pressing the feed latch release and cycling the action. Now the only way I can unload the gun is by firing the gun or pressing up on the carrier and pressing the feed latch release to unload one shell at a time from the magazine tube. Ammunition is too expensive to unload by firing every time. Any advice? It's odd that it will cycle when I shoot the gun but won't unload by pressing the feed latch release. I took the trigger assembly apart and everything seems intact and springs are working. I have no idea why it's doing this.

I would guess that there is debris or something under the shell latch or there is a something stopping the shell release from releasing the shell latch.
With the gun unload and turned over so you can look in the bottom.....press the shell release lever. does it make a audible click and do you see the lever move away and allow the shell latch to release and push the bolt release button outward. push the bolt release button and it should reset the shell release lever......repeat this several time so you understand what is happening. now, check to see if there is debris under and between the shell latch and the receiver wall. We have done so much for so long with so little, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing!

With the gun unloaded, the shell release lever does make an audible click and releases the latch.
However, when shells are in the magazine tube, it no longer makes the click. I do not see any debris, I took the trigger assembly out and everything looks fine. It is just concerning when I'm unloading the gun, it didn't do this until recently. As with all versamax's however, it cycles every round when I'm shooting it Not sure what to do about the unloading issue though.. Keep firing? |

Ok, now then..... What is happening is the sharpe inner leading edge of the shell latch is getting hung on or is digging into the soft shell head and keeping it from fully releasing normally.
A bump with the palm of your hand probably jars it loose and the dynamics of shooting makes it work fine. Take a close look at that inner leading edge of the shell latch and clean/dull it down with a nail file or Emory cloth and it should be fine. We have done so much for so long with so little, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing!
