Ooops. Did I say that out loud?

It has been my all-time favorite. It's not a Citation or any spin-off, it's the original Supermatic built in 1949 with 6-3/4" barrel with both weights. I can't say much for the box it came in, but it's all there and complete. When I get it back from High-Standard, I'll post some photos. It's mechanically worn, but still reliable & accurate as it was when new, and in pristine condition.

If you see Wolf Match Target or Match Extra {German SK Jagd} for a good price BUY IT. I have found that it shoots better than Green Tag. Or just look for SK Jagd ammo (same stuff) as it outperforms a lot of other expensive ammo.

You are most welcome. :)

Really, the name Wolf fools a lot of folks. It's VERY good accurate ammunition.

Just like "Norma" ammunition. Not many have ever heard of Norma brand ammo, much less, their TAC-22 precision ammo. Over 50 years I've shot a lot of Norma ammo without a single hiccup.

Very good indeed nitesite...!! Been using Wolf Performance Ammunition (steel cased) in both rifle ( .223 and 7.62 ) and pistol ( .22 / 9mm / 45acp ) with very good results for years.

They even have a "Gold" line...using reloadable brass...if that's what you prefer...

The Buckmark's round bull-barrel could make a difference in the print on the targets, but I'm not ready to place my bets on that one yet. If my old High Standard Supermatic comes back from the High Standard factory repair center with a clean bill of health, I won't need another .22 target pistol.
I had a Buckmark with a 4" barrel, bought it used, and still kick myself for selling it about a year or so later. Just one of the stupid things I've done with selling guns that I should not have sold. Needless to say, I don't do that anymore...I keep what I buy.

Anyways, that Buckmark was a great shooting gun. You wouldn't be throwing your money away to add one to your collection.

Well, that pretty well makes up my mind. I'll get the Hunter with 7" bull barrel and just add it to my collection of firearms. Like you 'rem', I keep all the guns I buy. No more loaning of guns either. I lost two guns by loaning them out to someone I trusted. Never again... Don't even ask. It's only money, but it's the principal. My guns are personal, just like my lady. Neither is for sale or loan.
Yeah. That is a good way to put it..."personal" that is. ;)

Not bad, but I beat ya this time. Heh-heh! Gander Mountain opened a new store yesterday. .22s all over the place. Got an ammo box of 1600 CCI Mini-Mag for $7.25/100. (Actually $6.50 with my discount). Going back today for some CCI Green Tag for $18.99/100. Gotta stay within their "per day" limits.

In an earlier post, I mentioned that I found some Norma TAC-22 and bought a brick from Midway. Well, I spent 3 hours on the range on Veteran's day with my S&W 22A-1 7" pistol and dispatched about 800 rounds of various target-class 22s. CCI Green Tag, Eley Club Extra, Federal Gold Medal Ultra-Match, and the Norma TAC-22. At 8 yards, Federal lost, punching larger than a quarter-sized hole w/ 50 rounds. The next 150 shots shared by the other 3 were between nickel & dime size. At 15 yards, the Federal went all over the place, covering about a 4" group. The next test for Federal at 15 yds will be with 2nd 50 @ 15yds after scrubbing the barrel. The CCI & Norma seem to love the waxy land edges inside the barrel before and after 1 pass of a Bore-Snake. They stayed below 1-1/2". I don't normally "scrub" a .22 target barrel except for inspecting for a particular imperfection or when shooting dry ammunition. Lubed precision .22s always seem to shoot more accurately with the wax built up against the land. Next trip I'll use my V-Block sand bags instead of the edge of a plastic MTM cartridge container and get those groups tighter.

hello,
is this the right thread to ask about 22LR choice for 597?
I used 40 gr CCI mini , 36 Federal but both there giving me lots ( 10/20%) of failed fires or/and catridges not been loaded properly into the barrel.

Do you mean "597", as in Remington 597 .22 LR semi-auto rifle? If so, try to start out with some original Remington "Golden Bullet" ammo in 40 gr round nose. I've found over the years that it has the largest rim diameter and works well with finicky actions, especially extractors that don't like to grab them all the time. If I'm right in assuming I have the rifle identified correctly, how long have you had it? Buy it new? Had any experience with any other ammo? And, barrel stamped ".22 Long Rifle", not .22 Long, or .22 WMR?

yup, my bad,; corrected in original.

I just bought it new about a month ago. Have about 500 rounds thru it by now.
I'm not sure what is stamped on the barrel to be honest. i'll check tonight. ( not WMR for sure).

DO VERIFY! One model of the 597 was chambered in .22 WMR. First of all, some autoloaders don't like subsonic ammunition and don't cycle reliably with such. Start at 1200-1400 fps of known good quality ammunition, like the Remington Golden Bullet. If it satisfies that 597's appetite, so be it. Then you can select different ammunition to try for more selective shooting tasks. If it does fix it, try another couple of brands of ammo but stick with Hi-Velocity during your testing. If more than 3 different brands of Hi-Velocity 'name brand' ammo still fail, I would entertain the possibility of a problem with the gun's action. Call Remington Warranty Service at that point. CCI has a vast variety of ammunition available in many different velocities & weights. CCI is also known for its reliability. Make sure you discover what speeds those CCIs were that you tried. Federal ammo... well, I don't have much confidence in Federal's rimfire ammo. Their centerfire rifle ammo is fine in all my rifles, but I've had more FTF & FTE with their rimfire in any speed EXCEPT their Gold Medal UltraMatch 40 gr @ 1080 fps. But, that's a bit pricey and lower velocity than what you want to test your rifle with at this point. Try Remington Thunderbolt 40 gr @ 1255 muzzle velocity, Remington Golden Bullet 40 gr @ 1255, CCI MiniMag 40 gr @ 1235, and maybe a box of something else you can find, but all in round nose lead or jacketed. If 3 out of 4 types function @ 100%, I'd say your rifle is ok and just acting like a typical female. Nothing wrong with that. You just need to know what she likes and keep her happy. Let me know what the results are, will ya?

Stick with 40 gr. if you can. Depending on your location and how you purchase ammo, you might have to grab something in Hollow Point or 36 gr. and that's ok too. The velocity & round nose shape is what we want to keep common since you're in discovery with a new firearm.

Another thing dbabo, don't rely on your local retailer's online site to locate available .22 ammo. Like, Gander Mountain, Academy, etc. Call them and find out when their shipment arrives and when they put it out for sale, then get over there to see what they have. They usually don't know what they're going to get in their stock order until they unpack & stock it. You'll have to do the footwork as soon as it's out on the shelf before the "mob" gets there and buys it up. Sometimes they sell out within just hours from stocking it. As we speak, Midway is out of all the .22 I recommended to you. But there's bound to be some at one of the online dealers. Bass Pro-Shops consistently has more .22LR than most.

took me a bit longer, but. It says "Remington 22 Long Rifle".

I mostly shop online @ wikiarms - don't have much free time during the day to go to mortar shops.

Happy Turkey Day gents :)

did some tests with a different ammo in $.05 - $.10 price range.
Remington Thunderbolt - worst groups - @25 yards indoor holes were sticking out of a dollar coin
Remington Cyclone - decent - inside dollar coin
Norma USA - best - all within a quater (coin size)
WinchesterX - as bad as Thunderbolt
CCI - as good as Norma

Overall:
no jams.

GOOD DEAL dbabo! Now you know! CCI locally or Norma online unless you find some on the shelf. Glad to hear you've found the 'sweet stuff'.

Shooter, Midway is where I've been buying my bricks of Norma TAC-22. I was so pleased with the TAC-22 when I discovered it last year and put it through the tests, or part-way through the tests. I'll be receiving my "real" Tack-Driver next week when the new magazines arrive. My High Standard Supermatic is finished at the High Standard facility here in Houston, and only 6 miles from me. That pistol will shore-up the results of my testing of & comparisons between the Norma TAC-22, CCI Green Tag, CCI 1070, Federal Premium Gold Medal Ultra-Match, and 3 different Eley match rounds. I'll pick a day next week or two and rent the rifle lanes at my favorite indoor range so I can have it for a couple hours of undisturbed shooting. They have 3 VIP (private) lanes there too. Maybe I can rent those instead of the 13 rifle lanes for a reasonable fee.

So far, the TAC-22 performance has not been beat by the other ammo as tested in my other target pistol and my Winchester Model 74 rifle (1941).

Just ordered mine. $126.00 including the NRA Round-Up donation.
