Way back during 1964, I was given an almost brand new Remington 514 22LR magazine fed rifle, by a distant relative, who was Vietnam bound.

Roll forward a few years, My parents split up, and somewhere along the line, My father determined that I should no longer own the rifle.
He contacted the distant relative who gave the rifle to Me, to pick it up, "to keep Me out of trouble".

After that, I lamented losing My 22, so during My final High School years, I began a re-kindled interest in firearms, both long and short barreled.

Fast forward some 40+ years, and I decided to replace My Remington 514 with a brand new Remington 504, to celebrate My 60th birthday, a couple years ago.
It's a vastly superior quality rifle as compared to the old entry level model 514, which makes one ponder the reasons why Remington opted to cancel production of such a fine quality 22, ie, the model 504.

Probably cost was the over-riding decision, along with the fact that at this time Remington had many 22 rim fire models on the shelves in both bolt, pump and autoloading designs. The 504 was a very well-crafted piece of kit and could not have been cheap to manufacture, plus it usually came with higher grades of wood stocks. I'd love to find an unloved/unwanted 504 sitting gathering dust somewhere to love, caress and shoot.

The 504 I saw, NIB, at the local GM I should have bought when I saw it. Now, this was about 6 or 7 years ago, but they were still stocking them there at that time, so I would guess Remington was still making them then. I picked it up and put it to my shoulder, and was impressed with how it had a "bigger" gun feel. I was also impressed at how thick the receiver seemed to be. Passed on buying one then...I should not have.

I don't think I'd be able to say "no" to one now either. They are high quality rifles, which probably contributed to their early demise.

I know right? It looked overbuilt for a .22.
