I acquired a 700 VLS .223 last week with a known accurate load using Accurate 2230 and 40gr Vmax giving 0.3 MOA. I tried it out at the weekend using some powder and bullets the previous owner gave as part of the deal and was shooting consistent cloverleaf groups at 100 yards. Unfortunately I cannot source this powder here as it would appear to no longer be stocked, also the Vmax is classed as an expanding hunting bullet and I need additional authority to acquire these bullets which I don't have. I only want to use this rifle for target shooting so would be very much obliged if folks could point me in the direction of a load which could give me similar accuracy. Preferably with as heavy a bullet as possible to try and buck the wind as much as I can.
I intend to use it out to a maximum of 400 yards but mostly out to 100 but I need it to cope with the full spread of ranges in between.
The rifle has the usual 1 in 12 twist and a 26 inch varmint barrel. I shall be using Lapua brass and for the short term at least CCI primers.
I tried it with some Hornady 68 gr HPBT bullets and it looked like I was using a shotgun, with skeet chokes.

I dont own that caliber, but fir my 22-250 I use varget powder, good powder but doesnt meter well at all. I put all my load on the scale for the powder, it does take time to scale them one by one.
As far as the bullet weight, you git to find what YOUR rifle likes.

Going to try 52 gr Sierra Matchking and H322 powder, Lapua brass and CCI primers, looks promising so far.

England. Vmax bullets are classed as expanding projectiles under our moronic firearms legislation.

When I was working fir a load fir my 22-250 I first started with different bullet weight factory ammo and see at 100 yards then 200 yards the differences on the target (wich one would give me a tighter group)
Then I reloaded with the bullet that gave me a tighter group using different powder charge. In my case I had 10 each at 35; 35.2; 35.4; 35.6; 35.8; 36 and 36.2 grains.
And then shot at 100 and 200 yards and kept the one with the tighter group

Well, after some testing, I think I have a load that suits this rifle. 24.0 gr of H322 with 52 gr Sierra Matchking bullets are cloverleafing at 100 yards and in my daughter's hands gave a 10 shot group of two inches at 600 yards.

True enough, all I need now is the skill to use it. ;)

Well? How are things going with the new rifle and developing your own tailored load for it?

Nice rifle, BTW.

I got this five shot group this morning, I think I will be sticking with this load. I used a Harris bipod and rear bag to help hold the rifle steady. I was using Lapua Match cases with a COAL of 2.260 inches and CCI primers.
