I took the Remington 783 in .308 to the range yesterday. It shot fine but I noticed a major problem with the magazine.

With the magazine inserted in the rifle there is a bit of slop (play) at the rear of the magazine, almost an eight of an inch, up and down. This causes the bolt to not catch the round and feed it into the chamber. If I hold the back of the magazine hard into the stock with my left hand while chambering a round it works fine.

I tried bending the tab at the rear of the magazine but it is too small of a tab to make up the difference in the amount of slop.

Anyone else have this problem or is there any play in your magazine and how much?

Thanks,

Tim

I purchased my 783 in October and have absolutely no play in my magazine.

Has you magazine always been a loose fit? It is hard to tell from your post if this is a recent purchase perhaps sending it back to Remington to get a new magazine is all that is in order. Otherwise they could verify the opening is manufactured out of spec.

I bought a 783 in 308 about 2 weeks ago. I went to the rang about 3 days ago to sight in, and notice the same thing. Every other round wouldn't feed in, about 15 rounds later I was just getting to upset. I tried a better brand ammo, and still the same thing. I then called Remington and they want me to send in my rifle in so they can look at it. They said they will cover the cost of shipping, and will take about 4 weeks. Long story short, I took my rifle to FedEx with the shipping paper from Remington. and they said its not prepaid and that I would have to pay.. Well I still have the rifle and I will have to call them again.
When I talked to Remington, I asked if this is a common problem, Cause I told them I have read a lot of forms with this same problem. They told me no, and this was the first complaint for this.. I don't believe them. But whatever..
Hope that helps

Hello, everyone... have the same problem, same story, called Remington they sent me a new magazine looks the same as the original no changes. the weather is holding here and I might take the rifle out again this weeks, seems like the bolt pushes the round down instead of pushing the round forward and feeding it correctly. I notice this after approx. 15 rounds also. I have seen posts that mentioned bending the magazine lip in the back down some so it will fit tighter and supposedly fix the issue. I have not tried that. I believe that issue should be corrected by Remington.

UPDATE: I went to the Range this week, and shot around 20 rounds with the new mag, but the rifle has the same issue. I'm not sure what to do at this point and feel a little disappointed, maybe is my rifle I have checked and double checked everything and re-torqued all bolts, cleaned the rifle but still has the same issue. I'm not even sure if I should send it in, since there is a post here that says the same issue still there after it was sent in. I read other posts about this part (Remington Short Action 783 Detachable Bottom Metal) and looks like it still has some fitting issues but seems promising in solving the feeding problem. I strongly believe that the bolt has too much play and that coupled up with a loose fitting mag is causing the problem.

UPDATE: after examining the rifle and how the magazines fit, and referring to the prior post by one of the other members, where he states there was no play in his rifle magazines, I went ahead and bent the two magazines lip down about 1/32" then I went to the range and had no miss-feeds after 20 rounds and several reloads. I have to conclude that the lip has to be modified to prevent this from happening, or the stock (where the magazine lip actually rests) need to be modified to raise the back of the magazine up a little resolving the issue of the bolt going over the round case and pushing it down preventing it from feeding it properly.

UPDATE: I have been to the Range a few more times, and the problem with the magazine being loose in the back is gone, so if you still have this issue might want to consider doing that, just don't bent too much at a time and try the mag fit every time until if feels solid or with very little or no play at all. hope it helps someone.

Feeding problem solved -

I just bought a remy 783 .308 and I was having the same feeding issue. I fellt like an idiot when I figured out what the problem was..After watching the bolt push the cartridge back down into the clip I took my doctor cap off and let my southern engineering skills kick in. I hope this helps someone before they go beating the hell out their clip. While unloaded, I noticed that the rear end of my clip was up and the front part was down. I thought nothing of it at the time. I had an SKS once that looked similar when empty.. So I figured that front end is stuck. I wiggled it with my pinky down inside the clip & bam it popped right up to the top of the clip. I oiled it and threw in 4 snap caps to test it. Cheeck cheeck click everytime beautifully. Feeding problem solved. Zeroed 3 inch circle at 200 yards that day.

I also have trouble on my 30-06. I notice I can load clip and put in gun with bolt open I am fine. If bolt is closed it will push back of shell down and wont pop back up when try to feed round. Back of clip is not pushing shell up with enough force. It does it on both clips I have.
